Could someone start a list of the various engineering majors (electrical, mechanical, computer, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer science, and whatever other engineering degrees that I've never heard of), including a brief description of what the major entails and what kind of job prospects it can create?

example: in civil engineering you learn how to ___, and with a degree in civil engineering you can work as a _ and get a job in such and such fields.

or something simple like that. thanks :)

also, if you're not an engineering major (yet somehow stumble across this topic), include whatever you majored/are majoring in on the list as well.

heh. smartass. don't think I havn't tried google...I'd just rather here some things from an actual live body (assuming you all on here are actual live bodies, which is hard to believe due to the fact that most of you have over 2200 on your SATs).

anyhow, thanks, grark, as I find Berkeley's page to be quite helpful and informative.

I'm sure if you ask more specific questions, there'll be plenty of people to answer, but you're not going to get a real response if you ask something that vague.

It's "hear". I also don't quite understand this "live body" that you're talking about.

And like ken285 said, specific questions and your own background would help. Are you interested in the biotech field and would like to get into it but don't know what to major in? Or perhaps you are interested in mechatronics, but don't know what major is right for you and what types of jobs are available after graduation.

That is the undergrad bulletin for CUNY City College (NY) if you scroll to page 190 you will find a comprehensive explanation of all the engineering majors, types of industry they get involved in, as well as required courses and electives which will be up to par with any ABET accredited program. Most of the classes will be the same at any engineering school, might be called and referenced under different names, material taught is pretty much the same though.

rutgers university also has a listing of different types of jobs you can obtain with the perspective degree. Also lists recent graduates and positions held:

here is another good career planning site for engineering, which includes overviews of many fields, as well as lists of colleges that offer majors in each field, and lots more!
