The distance, rate, and time problems in Grubers.

They are excruciatingly hard for me.. I really don't want to do them, but do many problems concerning the topic show up on the real SAT test?

That type of problem is worth mastering.

The way that Gruber’s presents with the annoying charts, or another way?

What’s the other way?

I am currently working through that part of the book as well and I was tempted to skip them because they were very confusing. After I carefully read through the example problems again and started a few of them I started to get the hang of it. The chart method seems annoying but it really helps to keep all the info organized and helps me see certain realationships. First I read a problem and then tried to set up the chart on my own, if I set it up wrong, I fixed it and then read the answer explanations. Doing that for the first few problems really helped me understand the concept better. Now I try to solve a problem on my own (or until i get stuck), before I look at the answers.
