I have dark hair + pale skin + freckles, and will probably be carrying some sort of Disney bag. I’ll be looking out for her!

Wow, Preview Day is almost here! My D was accepted to Film Production -she’ll be easily spotted with her partially blue hair. And looks Filipina (but is not.) She’d love to meet fellow Dodge College prospects!

Thanks Gladiatorbird, for answering my question. I’ve really enjoyed your insights.

It will be a busy weekend as we’re coming quite a long way and getting into LAX pretty late. I also have to commute her best friend to the Claremont campus during the trip. I’ll be the mom in the audience with the jet-lagged expression.

What’s the weather? It’s freezing here. Want to pack appropriately! looking forward to meeting other families in two days!

Erin I will text Julie your description and tell her to look for you.

Here’s what’s on for DA majors at Dodge this week:

Professor Bill Kroyer will welcome special guest speaker Jeff Okun, Chair of the Visual Effects Society and Senior VP of Prana Studios (recent purchaser of Rhythm & Hues). Okun will discuss the future of the visual effects industry in Southern California.

In May, Professor Bill Kroyer will welcome Oscar-winning director Mark Andrews (Brave). Andrews will talk about his career in story and the making of a PIXAR feature film.

What classes do the DA students take in the first 2 semesters? Since there are 19 required classes for the major, it looks like they will need to take 2 to 3 classes towards their major every semester.

DD is considering the game development minor and I’m wondering if that’s reasonably doable in 4 years. She’s also in the Honors program and we need to figure out what is reasonable to maintain her scholarship and finish in 4 years.

Yes, the coursework for the digital arts BFA is intensive. DS is also in Honors College and it’s quite do-able, though he’s very busy, works very hard and it requires being well-organized and proactive. He came in with 12 advanced placement credits, so that helps, as well. Honors is considered a ‘minor’ and those courses fulfill many of the GE requirements. DS recently applied for a second minor (in Television), but he won’t hear back for awhile.

His coursework this year as a freshman looked something like this:

Fall term: Introduction to Digital Arts (3 credits), Fundamental Graphics 1 for Digital Arts (life drawing for animators, 3), History & Aesthetics of Digital Arts (3), Honors course (Death, Self and Society, 3), Honors Forum (1), FFC course (3). TOTAL 16 credits.

Spring term: Mechanics of Motion (3), Fundamental Graphics 2 for Digital Arts (3), Introduction to Visual Storytelling (3), Storytelling in Digital Arts (3), Honors course (Universal Geometry, 3). Total 15 credits.

He is well on his way and–with a decent amount of planning–will certainly be able to graduate in four years (and keep his merit awards). We made clear that merit awards (and our support) expire after four years, so he’s highly motivated to stay on track. So far, so good! Hope this helps.

did any of the students at Dodge do CSSSA? What do admissions look weigh more - grade/test scores or portfolio? thx

Hey all, recently got accepted to the Digital Arts program as a transfer! I’ll probably attend because of the pretty good financial aid they’re offering. I’ll find out next week about USC, but it’s looking pretty bleak due to the amount of people they accept each year for transfers (like between 0 and 3) for their Animation program.

Excited to meet some other Digital Arts students this fall!

Hello,

Any recommendations on type of computer or specifications?

The Autodesk website has a hardware wizard that has recommendations for the Autodesk software listed on the preview day handout. They are all desktop workstations but we had planned to buy either a touchscreen laptop or laptop and some sort of tablet so DD could be more mobile.

Just wondering what current students are using and what you would recommend/do differently based on actual experience as a Chapman digital art student.

Thanks!

Not sure if anyone is still around from this thread, but if so, I would love to ask about finances.

Are you kids taking out loans to pay for Chapman? How much debt will they have at the end of four years? And if they’re not, how did they pay for Chapman? It’s very expensive even with the top merit scholarship and Cal and Pell Grants.

Hi, my son will graduate from Chapman debt-free. He received a merit award from Chapman, plus a second department-specific award from Dodge. The cost is equivalent to what we would have paid to send him to the CA public schools to which he was admitted (i.e. UCSB).

At the U.S. Department of Education’s College Navigator website the National Center for Education Statistics presents the best information available on all aspects for colleges & universities in the USA. At this site you can find some info on loans taken out by Chapman Freshmen that should be of help to you. Private bank & credit union loans, parent’s 529 accounts, saving bonds since childhood, 401k money…etc. of course are not shown.

The latest year shown is for 2010=2011:

<a href=“College Navigator - Chapman University”>College Navigator - Chapman University;

LongRangePlan, would you mind PMing me? I would be curious how much you paid out of pocket.

I ran the f. aid calculator and even with the top merit aid, plus extra merit aid, and need-based aid including Cal and Pell grant, there’s still a significant gap from what our EFC says we should pay. ($9500)

It seems like the Digital Arts/Animation program could be a good fit for my son, a junior, but I’d be hesitant to let him apply because of the costs.

A neat article on Chapman’s new state of the art Digital Arts building. Per Bill Kroyer, the new facility is will promote the kind of creative studio environment that puts drawing (and traditional skills) at the heart of the Dodge animation program. This emphasis was lacking before and it’s good to see.

Here’s the link (I hope that the news site keeps it open access:

When do notifications go out about art specific scholarships?
My son has been accepted for the class of '19 Digital Arts/Animation. It appears that this is an increasingly difficult major to be accepted into. Does anyone know the acceptance rate? Chapman seems to be a hidden gem in this field.
SHhh- yes it’s a hidden gem:) The new Digital Arts bldg. is state of the art. We heard that only
Supposedly under 20 students were admitted. They want to keep it small
