The dorm thread

What dorms have you applied to or what dorm are you in currently?

I applied to:
1) Beaty Towers
2) Springs
3) Lakeside

i lived in Reid my first year and loved it! :) Do you have any questions about any of the dorms you applied to? I may be able to answer them! :)

congrats!

Ya location-wise, how is springs?

I lived in Broward. One of the best choices I ever made.

I lived in Jennings and Broward and I never regretted it. Great locations and very social.

I'm living in lakeside for Summer B. Hume in fall/spring.

How did you like lakeside, and what do you expect of hume?

Lakeside is awesome! Small private bedroom in the apartment, two bathrooms for four people, nice buildings with elevators and AC... the only issue is distance, but the 20th route bus takes one from lakeside to the main area of campus rather fast. Unfortunately, the bus can take a while to show up.

I am very satisfied so far and are wondering whether I shouldn't just have put lakeside for fall and spring as well. I heard Hume has relatively nice dorms, but its kind of hard to imagine a better dorm than this. On the plus side, it will be closer to campus and all the honors stuff will be at hand's reach.

Wow now im somewhat regretting I put lakeside as third : /

Anyhow, good luck with Hume my friend is going there and he said its nice :D

Anyone know about beaty or springs

springs is great summer b (social and great rooms and locations is a good deal closer than lakeside) but usually athlete heavy in the fall/spring.
I stayed in jennings summer b and LOVED it and broward fall/spring and it was good (PERFECT location on campus)

GatorHubris:
I'm actually in beaty right now for summer b. Honestly, I had really low expectations before I moved in, and I'm not saying it's super spacious, but it did surpass my expectations. It's a 4 people, 2 room, 1 bathroom, and a kitchenette situation. My roommate and I have our beds raised pretty high for storage (seriously, you could like pow-wow under there). There's one desk in the room and two out in the common/kitchenette area, not the biggest desk, but it works. There's like an organizing unit thing that takes up like 3/4 of the back wall; you get four drawers each and two, I guess you can say, mini closet things (4 total) for clothes, and there's space above the closet to put even more crap. Yeah, that might not make sense until you see the room, but it's really not that bad. If you use your space wisely, it shouldn't be TOO cramped. Beaty gets dissed a lot for space, but I pretty much have most of my stuff settled in pretty well (afterall, it is a dorm). Now the bathroom...not so good. And the elevators...those really are my two biggest complaints thus far.
okay, that was kinda lengthy, but I hope that helped!

Wow thx alioooop,

Apprently Beaty has four desks, two in the respective rooms but two outside the bedrooms near the kitchen? I just saw this on a blueprint.

Thanks

Does anybody know anything about Yulee?

I'm actually living in Yulee this fall. From what i've read on other threads, the bathrooms were recently renovated. Also, when I went there during preview, i saw that they were in the process of replacing the old windows.

Location really is the biggest issue about dorms for me, that and the people in them. I don't intend on spending an inordinant amount of time in my dorm and want to be close to where I need to go. Hence, I chose Broward. It is very central and social. While they may not be the best quality dorms, who cares?

No problem gatorhubris. Yeah there's one in each room and basically a longgg desk facing the kitchenette for two people. It's really not as bad as it sounds, I personally don't do most of my work at the desk, it's more for storage.

drd0013:
I know you didn't really ask, but as for location, you really can't go wrong with any of the freshman dorms (specifically jennings, rawlings, beaty, broward). Those dorms are all max 5 minutes from each other. Don't get me wrong, Broward is closer, just not as significant as some make it out to be.

Hmm...I'm in Murphree right now (actually as I type this, I am lol) and it's pretty nice...even though it is in midtown area, it has a great location and everything is still close within walking distance (classes, rec center, gator corner dining, stadium, etc...)

The building was renovated in 2005 with new windows, furniture, bathrooms, central air conditioner, among other things.

I'll be in Fletcher for fall and while I was exploring the area, I noticed a sign posted inside the stairwell of one of the entrances about asbestos! Wonderful, asbestos in the room I'll be living in...And it turns out there has been news coverage regarding UF's asbestos problems:

Harmful housing? | Environmental Working Group - Cancer-causing material common in student residences Gainesville Sun

The Independent Florida Alligator - Asbestos fear causes student to exit dorm

I took a video and pictures of Murphree so if anyone is interested in seeing them, let me know and I'll put it on a public photo sharing web site and link it here.

I applied for:

Jennings

Rawlings

Murphree

I got Lakeside, and couldn't be happier. Absolutely love it here, having your own room is awesome, and being right next to SW Rec is sweet. Also have the Harn Museum of Art, amongst other cool things, right nearby. The apartment is awesome and having a kitchen is ace, also being in your own room isn't half bad and there's always room to be social. The distance from campus isn't bad at all, in fact, it only takes 6-8 minutes on the bus to get from Lakeside to the hub.

Love it!

The only dorm (at least in the Murphree Area) that really had any issues with it was Thomas. They spent the entire summer of 06 or maybe 05 cleaning it out. The issue people had with sledd was the high humidity and many would buy dehumidifiers.

Thats good to hear. I wish they would just eradicate it all together. I will not know until 30 years from now that if I develop cancer, especially if its related to asbestos, I'll know who to blame.

There is high humidity in Murphree, too...everything is sticky...I wish I had a (hygrometer) psychrometer...and a dehumidifier...haha
