The Economist magazine

Anyone subscribed it? people recommended it to me. I wonder whether it's too esoteric to read for a HS student? (sophomore). I'm not really a newspaper or a magazine reader. is it expensive? worth it?

It’s pretty good. I had to read a copy this summer for a project in AP Language and Composition. I has a lot of economic stuff, but also some normal newsweekly articles.

Me! Okay, actually my parents.

Nah, I read it occasionally when I was around 13-14. I still read it now, though less often.

DO NOT BUY IT FROM STANDS. DO NOT. It’s really expensive to buy it if you’re not subscribing to it (unless it’s a one-time thing). I think it’s now about $8.50. If you subscribe to it, it’s about $140 a year. That’s about $2.70 per issue!

Absolutely! It has a wide range of topics and subjects. I like the science section and the obituary section.

I find the articles very interesting…
…but I also plan to be an economics major.

If you’re looking for some interesting reading about economics, I would suggest Freakonomics, Superfreakonomics, The Real Wealth of Nations.

There are deals you can get on The Economist… I think we pay $30 a year. I love it… so much better than Newsweek or Time. The best part - practically no ads! A HS student can def. read it.

My daughter gets it and loves it, but we had some problems. She goes to college in DC, and we got a student subscription. Instead of coming through the mail, they left it in the lobby of her dorm! Needless to say she rarely got it. I wrote a few emails and now they have switched it to mail delivery, sounds like in DC they had another method.

it can be a little pretentious, but it’s generally interesting and really well written. and most importantly, the articles are well informed. much of what Newsweek, US News, and Time try to pass of as journalism is pretty bogus.

my two favorite articles I’ve recently read on their site:

[Scroogenomics: Give gold, not myrrh | The Economist](<a href=“Give gold, not myrrh”>Give gold, not myrrh)
[Going to America: A Ponzi scheme that works | The Economist](<a href=“A Ponzi scheme that works”>A Ponzi scheme that works)

Thanks for all the input. I think i’ll ask my parents look into it. how can i get a good deal? anyone knows?
