the economy and admissions

Does anyone have any thoughts on how the current recession is affecting the number of applicants/the number of students admitted? I feel like more students would be admitted and there would be less applicants, but would this have any affect on admissions in the ivy league, namely Penn?

Well financially most public schools are already in a problem for funding. I live in California and news already released that freshmen admissions in the UC’s are dwindling down and transfer admissions should increase by Fall 10’ (which is great for me) because of the California budget. As for the number applicants trying to transfer, it really depends on how financially well off the applicant is. Financial Aid will be harder to attain for applicants who are hoping for admissions causing more well off applicants to have a higher chance in admissions (given that the applicant is well in school). Higher amount of acceptances because the institutions will beleive that most accepted applicants will not accept due to the lack of financial wellbeing.

Private institutions is hard to really view. Private schools receive a bit of funding from the government through research and are heavily dependent of alumni donations and tuition. Most likely they will be accepting more applicants that are financially well off to pay for tuition rather than having a risk of an applicant that is unable to meet the demands of payment even with a planned out tuition payment schedule.

In affect to the Ivies, only some that I know of are in affect such as Dartmouth. Cutting of endowment, faculty, staff, construction, equipment, and etc. are in affect with every college. So I don’t really think Penn could escape this effect.

As others have said, generous need-blind schools will likely get more applications.

Is Penn need blind? I’ve never done financial aid so I really have no clue

yes, however their financial aid package is not generous either

oh, so Penn is up in the air…sigh

is there a waitlist for transfers at Penn then? if their packages are not generous then there must be a lot of transfers who get in but cant attend

I’ve been told that they use a waitlist some years but not others, this is probably one of those years
