after going through beast i reccomend bringing only what you need...ie the aforementioned items. Lighters...invaluable (bring a couple...)... leatherman...I think I used this the most. bring little things that will make life eaiser for beast. You dont need any clothes really...you dont need anything large...just little things like mentioned above will make beast a lot eaiser for ya.

Does anyone know if a digital picture frame is allowed?

If it will not survive a three foot sudden drop, do not bring it to R-Day...

We were told last year that digital picture frames are not allowed due to lack of electrical outlets.

Thanks for the responses usservicemom and wpmom2011. I get the 3 ft drop part but wpmom I was under the impression that digital frames were battery operated. Maybe they come both ways. I'll have to check it out.

Thanks again!

I talked to one member of the upcoming Beast cadre and she says by all means bring digital photo frames--lots of them. Also any HDTV up to 55 inches in screen diameter would be great too--members of the cadre will be more than happy to come assist in the unloading and setting up of these items in the barracks. It'll be one big happy time for all!!
:)

Seriously, it was suggested to us that you bring what is suggested/approved in your R Day materials and not much more. (Anything more should be in the way of extra band-aids for the feet!) Save the digital frames for after A Day.

Thurl, you are going to love being a West Point parent...really.

Once your child leaves on R-Day you will have fun sending mail. And when you start sending mail every day you start running out of ideas (if you are old and foggy brained like me). If your New Cadet takes a low tech frame, you can send pictures for that frame and voila! One really great solution to the problem of what to send in that envelope.

I just printed and sent pictures on regular computer paper sized to the 8 X 10 plastic frame my son took. He also left home with three or four pictures sandwiched in the frame so he could rotate pics. Did that frame make into his barracks room for Beast? I like to think that it did.

Truly, the official WP R-Day list is a work of art...the Army has only the best of intentions for your child....the optional items on the list are luxuries.

LOL. You guys are the best! I hope we can meet and have a drink together.

Thurl, "a"?

Im thick. What does "a" mean?

Embed pics into your letters and you can send pics every day--No one there is going to throw away letters from home.

Sorry, thurl. You are not thick, I was just being obscure.

The "a" I was referring to was in your post:

"I hope we can meet and have a drink together."

Maybe more than one drink would be in order if two Army parents were to meet...lol

Now I see! Things are coming clearer now. I totally agree with you. especially given what the next few months will bring. Thanks for the laugh.

Cheers!
T

"a"=1 drink. several is what all will be needing!

Hey everyone there are a few items that I was wondering whether or not to bring on R-Day...

Toiletries in general - as I am a girl I'll obviously bring some necessary feminine articles, but what other toiletries are recommended, i bought 2-1 Shampoo/Conditioner but the bottle's pretty big and I wasn't sure whether to bring things like face wash, lotion or sunscreen.

Eye Care - I wear contacts. Should I wear these to R-Day or just wear my glasses and not even bother bringing my contacts, as I'm under the impression that I won't be able to wear them at all during beast (sooo excited for bcgs... :-( ) Also i heard that a glasses security strap is recommended but do i really need one?

Address book - I know that pre-addressed envelopes have already been mentioned but is it ok to bring an address book with you, especially if stationary is provided?

Footwear - I was planning on bringing nylon inserts but do i need to purchase and bring boot socks or will they be issued?

Bag - They say bring a small travel-sized bag to carry everything in, but if I need to pack 2 pairs of boots, running shoes and this other stuff is it ok to have a little bit bigger bag (not bigger than 20"/24") What size do you recommend?

Well that was long but i think that was all of my questions. Thank you everyone for all your help!

As far as I know - (someone correct me if I get anything wrong!)

Toiletries - they supply you with these. you can bring them but they will weigh you down and they might be taken away. How about travel size to start? Defintely bring your favorite brands of "feminine necessities".

My daughter was told to bring lots of sports bras and underwear - make sure they are white. Apparantly the undies they give you are "gross" (briefs ) and the laundry is iffy. She was told to bring like 40 pairs - lol.

Eyecare - I think I would have you leave your contacts at home. I am not sure when/if you can wear them during BCT. definitely not in the field.
Definitely get the security strap for your glasses.

address book - make it small. not a bad idea really but - you may not feel like writing to anyone whose address you don't already have memorized.
You WILL want to sleep sometimes!

Footwear - they will give you boot socks.

Bag - you should be able to fit everything in a duffle bag. Don't bring much more than your boots and sneakers. Wear your low quarters.
Everything that isn't footwear in your duffle bag should be in a ziploc bag for quick and easy transfer.

40 pairs of underwear?! I'll definitely keep that in mind, haha. The address book my mom picked up for me is ~4"x3" so I think I'll be OK in that department. I think I'm going to bring a small bottle of 2-1 shampoo because when I did a WP visit the cadets I stayed with said that the shampoo they give you is really bad. The other thing they recommended I bring is Gold Bond Medicated Body Powder for prickly heat. I think I'll bring those two especially and just be prepared in case they confiscate it. Oh the adventures of West Point...

For corps squad sports screening, I'm assuming we bring cleats on R-Day, for football that is.

Also bear in mind that you PROBABLY can receive packages, at least last year that was allowed. I know, they say no, but when my daughter asked for things (like those extra dozen sports bras; may as well get gray, that's the color they end up) I sent them. I figured she knew what was and wasn't allowed, and if she made a mistake she'd suffer the consequences. No "boodle" of any kind, but I did send bras and underwear, blister band-aids, Q-tips (for cleaning weapons), decent shampoo, body wash, duct tape, extra socks, and more blister band-aids. The stuff they issue you is gross, but you can live with it for a couple of days until you can receive a box of stuff. You will be required to open it in front of the Cadre, so be sure it doesn't contain any items not allowed, like cell phone, I-pod, food, etc.

She started out the day with a small duffel bag that had her boots, running shoes, a change of underwear, toothbrush, Q-tips, duct tape, moleskin, several (6-8) black Sharpies, and not much else.

I took her contacts and cell phone to A-Day.

Perhaps what I will have her do is pack a box for me to send right when I get back from R-day. Everyone seems to be stressing that they can only receive "emergency" packages but.....

Earlier in the thread it was recommended to pack a small suitcase with some civies and other things they can have when school starts to have brought A-Day. KateMac - did your daughter do this? Do they have room for a small suitcase (carryon size).
