The Essay

I have an important question about the optional essay, and it seems I have been previously misinformed.

Here's my situation: The first time I took the ACT, I took it with the essay. I was satisifed with my essay score, but not my composite. A friend of mine told me that I did not need to retake the writing test if I was satisfied with my score, but lately Ive been beginning to have doubts. A few months later, I retook the ACT (without writing) and achieved a composite that I was satisfied with.

My plan is to send only the results from my second ACT, but many of the schools Im conisdering require the essay section. Because my composite from my first ACT is unfavorable, I do not want to submit the score.

Can I submit my second attempt ACT (minus essay) and SOLELY my essay (minus actual ACT) from the first time I took it?

Responses are greatly appreciated. I'm getting nervous here.

That's some sort of friend, he was probably thinking of this in terms of the SAT

Talk to the college admissions office, or ask ACT if you can send both score reports. I think colleges will understand seeing as one has the writing score and the other doesn't(the one with the higher score). BTW how much of a difference is the one with the writing section? It's not like colleges weigh the writing section more than the composite, but you should try and see if you can submit both and hope that colleges will use common sense and essentially superscore your ACT(the composite and writing, not the sub scores).

I have that same problem.

RahoulVA, ethier I didn't understand your post or you misinterpreted mine.

The thing is, is that I DON'T want to send my first ACT results, which have my writing score. My first was a 27 and my second was a 31. I'd rather not flash my 27 around to admissions committees.

Ideally, what I want is to send solely my essay score from my first attempt and my composite from my second attempt.

So what's the consensus? Can it be done?

you won't be able to send in only your essay score.. it's either the entire test or nothing at all.. so, the only way you can send in scores to the colleges that require the essay is to take the ACT + writing again and hope you get the composite (or higher) of the second test with the writing score (or higher) with the first test.. but you cannot send just the writing score from the first test with the second ACT you took.. ACT doesn't allow that
