if i choose the topic where i talk about someone who has had an influence on me, do i have to sell myself? its kinda hard to explain but shouldnt the essays show why i am i good fit to the college? so if i talk about someone how has a big influence on me, do i still have to squeeze in why i should be accepted? or will the colleges just look to see if I write well?

All personal essays will “sell” some part of yourself, whether it’s your personality, literally what you’ve gone through and done, etc.

I’m not sure what you mean by “squeezing in why you should be accepted.” if you write an interesting, well crafted essay, you don’t need to literally write, “and that’s why I would be a good fit at your college;” this should be implicit through what you reveal in your writing. It’s only necessary to be that direct if the prompt actually asks you to explain why you want to go to X college.
