The Essex Serpent - October CC Book Club Selection

^^^ Love love love the Kushiel series. When I finished the first one, I immediately reread it. I had to - similar to Dorothy Dunnett’s books (love love love them) - so much happens and you can’t quite piece it all together till the end at which point I wanted to reread it again. Enjoy!

Thanks to Mary and all who take the time to post. This is my favorite book club and my favorite group of readers. Till

Lurker here. I have enjoyed reading the selections, albeit very late since I end up on e-waiting lists at the library. This time, however, I got it right away. Look forward to actually having read it, if I can remember it, for December. Just reading The Essex Serpent now, just finished the Gentleman in Moscow. So I will be caught up.

^^^ Exactly how I started - lurking, then a catching up period on the latest ones, and now a regular. This book club is addictive.

Speaking of which @Mary13, can you post the list of all CC Book Club books once again?

@ignatius I’m pretty sure you’re the reason the Kushiel books are in my Kindle. I love Dorothy Dunnet’s Lymond books, though I never got into her other books.

I am reading Robert Wrights “Why Buddhism is True” for the second time. On deck, “Red Sparrow: A Novel” by Jason Matthews.

Hi @Singersmom07! I’m glad to know you’re out there reading along with us. Please go ahead and post if you have something to add even after discussion appears to have come to an end. It ain’t over 'til it’s over!

Per @ignatius’ request (52 books and counting!):

Looking at that list I think we did perhaps too many historical novels this year! (But enjoyed them all!) I’ve been here longer than I thought Jan 2013 when you guys decided to read* Possession*, and it seemed like a perfect opportunity to reread one of my favorite books.

^ And we’re about to be transported to another historical era with The Strangler Vine. We’ve traveled far and wide in 2017, across both time and place!

Something else I noticed: Out of our last 13 books, 11 were written by men (and only two by men of color, I think). That’s sort of unusual, as we had been pretty good about mixing it up in earlier years. M.J. Carter is a woman though (Miranda) – author of The Strangler Vine. (In fact, all three of our finalists this round were written by women.)

Mary13 what an amazing list, and kudos for keeping the discussions as fresh and interesting for NINE years!!! It’s astounding how some of those books evoke such strong memories, i.e. lonesome Dove, and others have faded away. I may have to reread some of these gems.

Love all the interesting books Mentioned above. . I hope you like Mary Lawson, @Mary13, and @mathmom you are starting with the first louise Penny, right ?

The state of the world/ country makes me want to retreat to a Louise Penny book, so I ordered an ebook from the library.
Also, I have a new author to explore, suggested by @ignatius. Sarah Addison Allen. " The Sugar Queen"

I’m drawn to female writers, and surprised 11 out of the last 13 selections were written by men. Glad the next one is written by a woman.

Looking at our list through the years, there is no question that I remember the books we have read together much better than those I have read on my own. This group puts me through a mental exercise that’s both healthy and a great deal of fun. So if anyone out there is on the fence as to whether or not to join our next discussion, remember, it’s good for your brain!

I was struck by how well I remember *The Hound of the Baskervilles *and not the contemporary version. I’ve also really enjoyed the classics we have read.

Popping in to say I didn’t end up reading “The Essex Serpent,” what with the wedding and trip to Italy. Both were huge successes! Now it’s back to reality.

Currently reading “4 3 2 1” by Paul Auster. This was the October selection for my RL Book Club, although I missed the meeting. I’m really enjoying it; interesting premise, although it’s somewhat confusing to keep the 4 plot lines straight.

Hope to join you all for the December selection.

Thanks for checking in! I’m so glad everything went well!

I’ve never read anything by Paul Auster. I’ll have to give him a try.

I just finished reading The Essex Serpent, which I received for Christmas. I read through the interesting discussion; too late to comment now, I suppose. But I appreciated the gorgeous cover, the complex nature of the characters, the absence of predictability and stereotype. Even when the latter annoyed me.

I also greatly enjoyed @mathmom 's interpolation of the superb poem Dover Beach. A favorite of mine, also. It leads me to contemplate it in relation to The Idea of Order at Key West, another great poem that takes place on the edge of earth and sea.

I like Wallace Stevens very much too, though I don’t always fully get his poems.

I have at times advised people to just let him wash over you.
