The Exeter Thread

southmeetsnorth- Homesickness is a problem for new students at first. To be perfectly honest, most of the freshman I knew spent the first couple of nights ...crying themselves to sleep.I'm not trying to scare you, only let you know what to expect. It's hard going away from home for the first time but it does pass I promise. Dorm life can be wonderful. In some dorms in particular the faculty is amazing, so open and warm, and really into being like second parents. Everyone has their own traditions- some dorm parents have weekly Gilmore Girls sessions in their apartments for example. As your advisor lives in the dorm with you, you get very close to that person and most people have found that they are always there when they need them. Keep in mind that although the homesickness does exist, everyone is in the same boat as you. The best advice I can give is to open up about it. You know what I said about the crying- none of us admitted that to each other until a couple of years later, at the time we each thought we were the only one coping with those feelings. It would have been much easier if I had known that I wasn't alone in it, and I really wish I had just said something to my friends. You can really make a family with the people you are at Exeter with, you just have to be open to it.

Miss, can you give us an example of a math problem?

I could only find my old "Math 3" book. Math 3 =third year math, but only if you start with algebra 1 freshman fall, which not a lot of kids do. So you would most likely end up using the math 3 book sophmore (aka lower- we call the years prep, lower, upper, senior) year. However it's on the first page so it's most likely more of a "review" question.
haha ok I hope i'm not breaking any rules posting this
here's the problem:
'Starting at the same spot on a circular track that is 80 meters in diameter, Sandy and Cnady run in opposite directions, at 300 meters per minute and 240 meters per minute, respectively. They run for 50 minutes, what distance separates Sandy and Candy when they finish? There is more than one way to interpret the word distance in this question'

About 80 meters?

Um sure...haha I don't remember it was a very long time ago, but I think the point of the problem was to make you consider not only the straight across distance (78ish meters I think) but also to consider the distance around the track, as in a portion of the circumference.

Yeah, but I didn't feel like figuring it out.

And that type of problem basically teaches you to develope the concept on your own before you hear about the traditional solution?

Uh not really, but again I could only find my math 3 book, which means lots of trig concepts etc, so I tried to find a problem that would have terms an incoming prep would be familiar with.
Faculty info is posted on the Exeter website, and I promise that almost any of the math teachers would be happy to email you practice problems if you ask- Exeter teachers are like thet :). You can always buy a math book in the bookstore annex when you visit, too! (They are like 3 bucks, a nice difference from the cost of other Exeter books)

Bump Bump Bump

I'm a current Exeter upper (11th grader), class of 2006. It's great to finally see an Exeter thread in CC. I'm open to answer questions too while I'm still on spring break, though I think missariella is doing an excellent job.

what do you Exonians think is important to consider if you are choosing between Exeter and SPS? Do you have any contact with SPS students since they are down the road? What difference do you see in the student body between the two schools? thanks

To be perfectly honest, St. Paul's doesn't have much of a presence on our campus. Despite its location, we are far too immersed in our age-old rivalry with Andover and such. For some reason, I never even heard of St. Paul's when I was applying to prep schools (not to discredit its merit), and even upon arriving at Exeter I didn't hear anything about it until I logged onto CC and found such great reviews about it. From what I have discerned from these boards, it seems like St. Paul's has a smaller more closely-knit community feel and more of a hold-your-hand mentality. Academically I believe the two schools are equals. I'm not sure about diversity, though. What is the URM and international student composition at St. Paul's?

St. Paul's and Exeter are really different schools from what I know. I'm leaning more towards Exeter and Andover because of their great new science facilities (future molecular biology/genetics major)!!!

Why does Exeter refuse to reveal where its graduates apply/get into college?

Andover, Groton, Milton and Deerfield all report this information.

Good question, I always looked for matriculation information but could never find it. I found it for all the other preparatory schools on their websites and viewbooks.

They had some matriculationinformation in their handbook... the very end. But that is a good question. Do you think it has to do with either believing in confidentiality or if it is just a result of them not recieving as high of acceptance ratings to colleges?

I'll check. Thanx.

Such information is available to all uppers and seniors who are going through the college process. I have a personal account at college.exeter.edu which includes a variety of resources, including matriculation/acceptance rates, average gpa, average SAT scores and other such statistics.

However, we don't hide our college matriculation rates. If you go to www.exeter.edu, use the scroll bar and go to "college", then click on "library" at the bottom, and then expand "other resources". The matriculation list is available right there.

..or go here, which I think is a direct link:

http://college.exeter.edu/published/newsletters/College_Matriculation_2002-2004.html

O, I know you can find past matriculation stats... I was talking about this year's.

I applied and was accepted to Exeter for my sophomore year but ended up not going. I have two friends there in the class of 06 though and from what I hear, they love it.
