What's the deal with EC's? Do you really need 583902 to get into a top college? Or just one that you devote most of your time to?
How do colleges look at EC's?

you need to basically show two things: passion/committment for something (most likely your interested field of studies in colelge) and leadership

most likely your interested field of studies in colelge

I don't understand... I love cooking and I devote a lot of time to it. Does it mean that I need to major in cooking in college?

Colleges look for passion.

It's better to have a few clubs you are heavily involved in than to have a laundry list of ECs.

"most likely your interested field of studies in college" (spelling corrected)

NOT true.

The EC's my D showed passion for, she went so far as to mention in an essay "While I dont intend to major in &&&&& in college, having my work recognized at such a high level is an honor." (She was top 12 in the nation in her EC)

She went further to state "Im still unsure of exactly what I want to study..."

HOWEVER, her ECs DID show PASSION. She even had 2 recs that incorporated those passions (she had "only" 2 EC's, but each of them was something she was dedicated to for 4 years).

My D was accepted into a top LAC, which was a reach for her, but her top choice.

So no, you do NOT need "583902" nor do the one(s) you have need to "point to your field of study in college"

Actually it makes you look a bit more focused, go for ones in your field of study if that's what you're good at and it interests you
