<p>Because the land its on was once the Stanford horse farm.</p>
<p>Leland and Jane Stanford once owned the land we're located on, and it was a farm. A horse farm, apparently, though I didn't know that before. When their son, Leland Jr., died, they built the university and dedicated it to him.</p>
