Good point, I was just making clear that Mexicans have had a longer history of discrimination in the United States - the basis for affirmative action.

And that not caring for each and every value of culture is percisely what I have been trying to teach my school about....in an effort of cultural unity! My recs explain this and hopeful this will catch harvards eye. I am extremely passionate about cultural enlightenment and I hate how cultural ignorance brings so many people apart...WHY!! :( Being the first hispanic...and pretty much the first minority valedictorian at my school I have faced quite a bit of dirty faces and jealousy...but ya know what......that makes it all the more better!

FUERZA LATINA!!!!!!

Gosh I hope I get in Harvard....I wanna join that organization badly!!!!......and the philips brooks house AHEAD programs!

"Being the first hispanic...and pretty much the first minority valedictorian at my school I have faced quite a bit of dirty faces and jealousy...but ya know what......that makes it all the more better!"

People are always going to be jealous of the individual who is named Valedictorian. I highly doubt that those "dirty faces" are the result of your ethnicity.

yeah, apfreak, i dont think the academic jealousy you encounter is a result of ethnic discrimination...

i think people will always be jealous of the valedictorian regardless of race

nah dude...there's that type of jealousy and there is something in the undertone of speech...it is felt...no heard...just never mind that....you are right...regardless of what happens people will ALWAYS be jeolous of those at the top!.....but ya know what..

TOO BAD!! ;)

dude look that hispanic organization looks nice, but dude, give it a rest. I am sick of hearing Fuerza Latina and AHEAD. Im hispanic, and love my culture, but dude we are in the US. British academia is the norm.

okay......:(

yeah, i think you may be trying a little too hard...for your sake, i hope the adcom doesnt think so, but it seems like you're taking it beyond a little....couldnt you still be part of fantastic hispanic organizations at other campuses?

Apfreak,

I feel bad saying this but I think it needs to be said. Last year, staticsoliloquy was deferred and then rejected from Harvard. I'm not sure if Vietnamese is URM (he was Vietnamese), but he was economically disadvantaged (very very family income). But despite this, he held a job for all of high school, while pursuing a passion for research that most people probably wouldn't even be able to understand. He got the NIH grant (which is AMAZING, it is very hard to get), went to RSI (also amazing), but didn't get in because of a 1310 on his SAT . That translates to about 1980 on the New SAT, about 200 points higher than yours. I think you still have a shot, but you can't bank too much on URM and passion, since Nghi was disadvantaged, passionate, had national recognition, a higher SAT, and didn't get in.

I highly doubt he didn't get in because of his SAT scores. Only an adcom can measure how well his essays were written and how well his recommendations were.

Yeah that staticsoliloquy kid was amazing. But lets ot make it a sob story, he did get into stanford after all. which is not too bad. :)

Oh dear...that is not a good thing to hear....:(....well I will hope for the best and prepare (A LOT) for the worst.......

Being Asian is a disadvantage since Asians are ORM's. Now, if he'd been a URM with those kind of stats, he would've probably got in...

Yea, the fact that he was asian was his downfall. Look APfreak, Ill join the organizations with you if I get in. I like them, they seem pretty interesting. However, dont try to alieanate yourself from the norm. This university and this country were based upon Britain, it is the mother country if you will. I am not saying that you should leave your whole culture behind, just try to absorb some of theirs.

VERY VERY EXTREMELY low SAT scores for Harvard of any ivies.

International students and any minorities - need high numbers to REPRESENT yourself.

I have....but it is best to have the strength of ALL cultures to your knowledge. :)

"-School SAT/ACT Avg: 989/21
-percent going to a 4 year college: 40%"

Actually, I go to a suburban high school, and our SAT average is only about 1060, and only about 41% of the students qualify to go into the local four year universities.

Really...? What are you trying to say though? Is going to a school with a 40% local college 4 years rate good for harvard admissions? Is it anyone?

The adcom wont care about ur local or school situations. It's a global world. Compare yourself with the entire earth. Where do you stand?
