the food at cornell?

they charge like $3 for a scoop guacamole while avocados are 2 for $3 at the grocery store.

And everybody knows that the statler is the place you go for ridiculously good wraps and burritos.

at chipotle they have the guacamole for 1 dollar...that burrito place is jacked up!!

eh...TBP isn't really that great compared to Chipotle. Gomestar's right, Terrace in the Statler is the best place to get burritos and wraps (I'd say it's just as, or even better than Chipotle)

wow! Just biking to Cayuga Lake, and then, catching an alive trout in Lake Cayuga? and cooking it? and eating it? and sharing it with your friends?

Is catching fish pretty common?

Cornell Admissions should have attached the trout story in their Case for Cornell. I bet that would have raised yield rate like no other. That's now officially the most romantic image I'll have of Cornell from now on. That's simply amazing, CayugaRed2005.

what!?? what is this place? i heard that there is no chipotle at cornell, so i was actually getting worried. is this place that good, good as chipotle? where is it exactly?

Also, if i live on the West Campus (which is likely since I am a soph transfer next year), where would i eat? I heard that food at North is good, so does that mean that i better walk to the north campus to eat? Thanks.

you only get like 10 meals a semester on north with the west campus meal plan as far as i understand...so that would be a no. the food on west is still really good...just not as good as north. but going to north would be kind of a pain anyway.

I'm not certain most Cornellians would chalk up fishing as their number one pastime, but sure, a certain subset of students fish at Cornell. For that matter, a certain subset of the student population at Cornell probably feels that fishing is one of the most vile and inhumane acts you can do.

Flyfishing at the base of Ithaca Falls is pretty common too, but I wouldn't eat the fish out of Fall Creek as it is downstream from the Ithaca Gun Factory.

Now that I think about it, there was a kid who was all over the Cornell press last year for catching the biggest fish ever caught out of the Hudson:

http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/June07/bigFish.kr.html

Other fond food memories I have from Cornell:

-- Every year, one of my friend's fraternities would host a bona fide pig roast, cooking the pig over the course of 14 hours. Best bacon I have ever had. (The somewhat funny thing was that their house was right across the street from the Kosher Dining Hall. Even more ironic was that the head pig roaster was a lapsed Jew.)

-- Shabbat 1000. Basically Hillel rents out the big track and field house on campus and feeds anybody who wants a delicious Jewish dinner for free. The baklava was amazing. So was the challah.

-- Pumpkin pie baking contest. When I was an upperclassmen, my friends and I would hold a pumpkin pie baking contest every autumn. The catch was that you had to make the pumpkin pie from scratch -- no canned pumpkin allowed.

"you only get like 10 meals a semester on north with the west campus meal plan as far as i understand"

Just get another plan. I would always either walk up from west or dive up to to food at north.

One of my fondest food memories was actually last semester when Cornell had the "traveling gourmet" thing from some mexican place in texas. Damn!!! I got there at 4:59, busted through the doors when they opened, secured my seat, and went to town on everything. It was glorious from start to finish. And, of course, I ate too much and had to take part of the night off to recover.

Also, eat at the law school. There's that small a la carte dining option. Basically, it's this one black dude who blasts un-edited hip hop (in a stereo that has speakers that light up with bass response) who whips up incredible food. His pancakes are legendary, a short stack could feed a small classroom of kids. And his lunch time sandwiches are ridiculously good.

Hughes!

The short stack of pancakes are ridiculous. There were Friday mornings my second semester senior year were I would wake up, go get some Hughes pancakes, and then go back to sleep until the early afternoon.

Also, for lunch, they have the Dagwood, if I remember correctly, which is a huge sub with both burgers and chicken breast, smothered in honey Dijon sauce.

I think I gained around 30 pounds when I was at Cornell. I've since lost about 20 of them.

yeah, i was worried that cornell wouldnt have a chipotle too, cuz thats where a lot of college students usually hang out here by UCLA and UCBerk. I went on google and typed chipotle ithaca and i found an imitation that supposedly comes close, which is called "that burrito place" and it is relatively close to campus; i believe in the commons (?). Anyways, supposedly they have better burritos in the hotel...so now i gotta try those when i go visit

this might be a really dumb question, but I just applied for 7 meals/week. If I don't use 7 one week, do I get 8 the next or something? Do meals rollover? I looked on the dining site and couldnt' find this! thanks! =]

password, I don't believe meals roll over. At least they don't at my current school.

does anyone have reccomendations for healthy eating at cornell? i absolutely refuse to gain the freshman 15

the freshmen 15 isn't because of dining hall food, it's because students unleash themselves on 5 beers a night (750 calories right there) and then get the munchies and down bags of potato chips and nachos.

i thought with meal plans for west campus you still have the option of 75 or 50 meals in the other all-you-can-eat dining areas? why would it be only 10 on north?

CB: i didnt gain the freshman 15...i actually lost 8 when i first got to school even with eating pizza and ice cream! and like you, i was TERRIFIED of gaining 15 lbs!

the catch- i walked EVERYWHERE, always ate my veggies and salad before my main dish (because if you fill up on the healthy stuff first, you are less hungry so you wont be inclined to finish that burger or slice of pizza), i had a gym membership, didnt eat at nasties every night (to be honest, i only had it 3 times the entire year), and i didnt drink alcohol. simple as that. just eat the way you do at home and you'll be fine. just because there are always french fries and fudge brownies available doesnt mean you have to have it all the time. i also created "rules" for myself such as: i could only have 1 dessert per day, but i could have it twice if i went to the gym, i could only eat pizza once a week, and i couldnt go back for seconds.

The West Campus house meal plans are different from those offered to students who live elsewhere.

The freshman 15 is easy to avoid...especially given Cornell's terrain :-) I think CU does a great job of providing healthy eating options to students...and walking everywhere is great exercise. I also tried to swim 1 mile at least 3 times a week....swimming is great exercise. Easy on the joints and you can burn a lot of calories (750 in one hour if you swim hard).

Generally speaking, how much exercise can you get at Cornell by just walking everywhere when weather permits? Is it a lot of walking? Is the campus that big?

Does Cornell add any trans-fat into the food? I am looking for low calories, low trans-fat, low saturated fat, low sodium, high protein, high vitamin A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I... etc.

My bro is at U of T and he's having some liver problem due to too much fat, and he's having eating disorder because he usually eats at 11:00pm at night instead of at normal time.

I am an extreme swimmer, so I usually burn off 500~600 calories an hour.

What does Cornell have other than oily fat burgers and fries and sandwiches... (I am just tired of Western food)... Chinese at Cornell or Ithaca?

Also, "Flyfishing at the base of Ithaca Falls is pretty common too, but I wouldn't eat the fish out of Fall Creek as it is downstream from the Ithaca Gun Factory."

There are guns at Cornell? Have you seen any guns? How safe is Cornell? Are there stores near Cornell that sell guns? Is the gun registration strict and safe? How easy is it to get guns? Do students have access to guns? Are students allowed to have guns in dorm?

They don't intentionally add trans-fats....like I mentioned...Cornell provides plenty of delicious options to health conscious students.

If you're that extreme...you'll burn closer to 800 calories an hour. Found that out the hard way :-)

Chinese restaurants in Collegetown. The Statler also has the most amazing made-to-order salads. There are also sandwiches, fruit cups, wraps....everything under the sun.

There used to be a gun factory in Ithaca near the campus...it's been gone for a long time but I think there are some pollution issues surrounding it. I heard it might be demolished.

I've never seen a gun on the Cornell campus. Although...I'm not sure if the Cornell Police carry guns. Anyone know?

Some members of the SA, Cornell Republicans and others helped spearhead a proposition that would allow Cornellians to carry guns on campus...it didn't pass.
