The food at the dining halls is absolutely rubbish; I just can't take it anymore. Most of the time, the food is either tasteless or tastes like ***. When the food actually does* have some good taste, it's usually overcooked and hard to eat. And I'm supposedly at one of the better dining halls, CKC.

Any suggestions on elsewhere to go for dinner? Maybe steakhouses? Sushi bars? High class restaurants where I can get some decent food for a reasonable price?

^ Maybe I should’ve. The food looks great. Actually, if I had the chance to do it all over, I would’ve probably gone to community college for two years and transferred thereafter to save money. But that’s another topic.

Well, look at the bright side, you don’t have to worry about gaining weight from overeating!

Well, you might not save money eating at steakhouses and sushi bars.

On the admitted student tour they actually said that there cafeteria food had won some kind of emmy for college food. Was that a lie??? I can’t remember which one he was referencing specifically but it was on a tour I took last week.

^ In 2007:

Don’t know if it’s changed…

So he was telling the truth, sort of.

For a freshman whats probably the best plan? Does our S even have a choice? or do they force you to get the highest one freshman year at the dorms?

@santookie: If your son is living in the dorms, he automatically gets the standard meal plan (it is included in the dorm fees), which is 1200 points per semester. That’s more than enough, I remember going to the dining hall everyday last semester, and I still had a hundred points left over. You can also pay $350 more for the premium plan (1500 points/semester) or $750 more for the ultimate plan (unlimited entry with 500points/semester). Though I wouldn’t see why anyone would want more meal points, given how disgusting it is.

@testobsessed: Well, a few more bucks spent on food won’t matter as long as I’m happy and well nourished, right?

Back to topic; anyone have any suggestions for good food/restaurants near campus?

With the year coming to an end, you’ve hit the food wall. Now you know first hand why some people (if given the option) go without a meal ticket. I don’t know how many meals that you’re eating at the cafeteria but I found (different school) that 10 meals a week was the max that I could stomach, and of that I usually used it for breakfast on test days and lunch on heavy course days and dinner on heavy study nights, which was usually Monday & Tuesday nights. The point is to pick your meals.

BTW-My pet peeve was hamburger night. The burgers weren’t that bad but for the next two nights there would be some sort of mystery casserole with the leftover hamburger meat. C’mon at least pretend like you’re not serving leftovers. Thanks for the memories, I’m getting indigestion just thinking about it. GL

The meal plan owns

-Unlimited Food
-Unlimited fruit and vegetables
-Unlimited milk
-Unlimited peanut butter
-Unlimited tuna
-Unlimited eggs
-Unlimited pizza
-Unlimited everything

God damn I miss the dining commons so much. So sick of disgusting and unhealthy Asian ghetto and Chipotle food.

edit: though I agree. UCLA destroys Berkeley in every way. Should have gone there.

^ Every way?

Gotta drive 25 miles to watch “home” football games?

There are no extraordinary majors at UCLA. Biz-econ is like their tops and it still sucks balls to Berkeley.

Learn to read the menu of all the dining commons. One ought to stand out. Sometimes none will and you will just have to eat out. I hate when people who always stick to one DC complains about the menu… Cafe 3 has been much better this year. Crossroads has gotten worse…

I just want to say as an alum, I do not mind driving 25 miles to watch home games. Because when you’re an alum, you’re going to be driving there anyways. Also, tailgating at the Rose Bowl > tailgating at Berkeley.

Good luck paying off that debt for your new stadium btw.

Really? I’m planning to attend UCB this coming fall and I’m a very picky eater! I would think Berkeley would have one of the best dining food since its a top university and by Ankur1521’s description the dining options seem…well, awesome.

@Sandy, some days are good, while others aren’t. Checking the menu every day helps a lot if you’re a picky eater. I usually do this to prevent myself from eating out too much. I’d say I usually eat out 1-2x a week when the menu doesn’t look that appetizing…

I consider myself a picky eater too and I wouldn’t say the DC food is THAT bad. Though, I’d say Cafe3 & Foothill have higher quality food than Crossroads. I wouldn’t stress out too much about food haha.

There are non-dining hall options that take meal points as well, such as the Golden Bear Cafe (which sells burgers, fries, salads, etc.), Ramona’s (which has paninis and rice bowls), and Qualcomm (which has salads and wraps). Personally, I think Qualcomm’s wraps and Ramona’s rice bowls are better than, say, 2/3 (or maybe more) of the food served at the dining commons.
