the freshman application

Hi I'm new to college confidential, so sorry if this question has already been posted/ if it's somewhat silly.

When they say this on their app: "(Completely Optional) No admission application can meet the needs of every individual. If you think additional information or material will give us a more thorough impression of you, please respond below. (Please limit your answer to 500 words or fewer.)"

does this mean I can write an essay? Or is it just if there is extra info that on my app that needs to be expalined...?

other schools i'm applying to have similar things, so what do they really mean? a chance to submit another essay? or only to be completed if there's extra info about something uncommon on your application.

thanks!

You can submit absolutely anything in response to that question -- it is completely optional, but if you want to write a few words about an unusual academic circumstance, or if you want to submit an additional essay, you should feel totally free.

MIT is pretty flexible in general about extra application materials. If you think there's something or some piece of information that can help your case as an applicant, you can send it their way. Some information on other supplemental materials can be found here.

As a specific example, I wrote an essay about how I loved MIT's culture in the "extra info" section. Just, I dunno, in case you wanted a specific example...

Does it have to be about academics, or can it be a piece of creative writing, or something we couldnt fit in the application elsewhere?

As I said above, it can be absolutely anything.
