The Freshmen Experience

Hi there!

Let me be the first to welcome you to what will hopefully be a very successful and enduring thread, through hard work and determination!

Nearly two months ago I came upon a site called College Confidential. At first glance, it was just one of countless sites that I had searched through, looking for
information available on admissions to Penn State and Oswego. These are the colleges I had applied to near the end of November, for the Meteorology Program.

In fact, from a young age, this has been of most interest to me. I've known since I was young kid that Meteorology was right for me, and I hope to successfully get
a degree in it and make a difference in the field one day.

But up until a few days ago, that's all it was, a hope.

Sure I have some pretty decent stats (3.67 gpa unweighted, 1990 SATs), and my initial thought was that Oswego was a sure-in safety school, and Penn State was just worth
a shot (right?). Suddenly though, at 12:07 AM on January 20th, 2012, things changed.

I was accepted to Penn State for Fall 2012.

With the ability to get a degree from a school known for many things, let alone a famous Meteorology program, I could know accomplish even more than I originally
thought.

But here I am on one site in a million checking out the "stats" of other people, and getting their opinions. As i'm sure many of you can relate to, at this point
I had checked out so many Yahoo! Pages under the search engine it was madness. But this site was different.

Over the last two months, i've met some of the most mature and respectful people I ever have online. Why is that? We all share a common goal, looking for a
common prize at the end of all of this waiting. We want to get into our college, into our program, and be successful of course.

As I waited for months for an answer from Penn State (yes, i've decided to go there), I became more and more impatient. And now, with acceptance to the school),
I already began to plan my journey.

--But wait a minute, I can't forget the nice experiences and enjoyable friends i've come to known on College Confidential, can I?

So here we are, at this thread. The point? To document the experience of an incoming freshman, as he (myself) commences his senior year, makes plans for his life
at college, and ultimately begins the journey for a degree.

Thus, with the help of a few who have also been accepted, and with my encouragement that all and any who are accepted and will attend should help share their
experiences, this thread is made and planned to succeed.

Before I officially begin to allow posts, here is my basic profile, and a few points to the thread.

And with this, I begin the new thread. Good luck to all who are hoping to get in, and I hope to meet some very nice and enthusiastic attendees
on here and once i'm at Penn State!

I’m also very happy to help in this thread! Getting into PSU was such an amazing feeling and I can’t wait to go to the accepted students visit in a few weeks (February 11th). Good luck to everyone that is still waiting and those still deciding!

This is great! :)

I am double checking Alabama and UConn to make sure that they don’t have anything else to offer, but I am most likely attending for Summer 2011.

I’m very involved with the football team at my school. I wrote a history of the team (we’re in Brooklyn, and I am honored to say that one of our first coaches was friends with Joe Paterno), I have created Media Guides and Year in Reviews. When I decided that I wanted to work in football professionally, I sat down with my football coach - and great friend - and he gave me some ideas. He said, “Big Ten”. And while researching the schools in the Big Ten, I knew I could never get into Northwestern, and to be honest, the rest of the schools were so far.

When researching Penn State, I realized how alike it was to my high school. My high school has almost 6,000 kids, which is nothing in comparison to the 40,000 at University Park, but for a high school it is very large. I love knowing so many people in the student body and to be able to have a diverse group of friends with a variety of interests. Sure I like football, but I also enjoy discussing politics or watching Portlandia. I know that at Penn State, there will probably be no one who has all of the same interests as me, but there is at least one person for each of my interests and that is what is so great about Penn State. Academics and athletics can go hand in hand, and both my high school and Penn State show this.

Visiting the campus in April just sealed the deal for my love of the school. Everyone was so nice and I was amazed at what the school offered. I went to the Penn State-Iowa football game and it was an experience like no other. I have Jets season tickets, and I have been to too many football games, and when I say I have never felt the way I did when screaming the “WE ARE” chants after the touchdowns, I am not lying.

Can’t wait to start Summer 2012 in the Happy Valley :)

Sounds great guys, excited to have you help! Committing soon.

I’m not sure how many questions people might have about college in general, but I’m a sophomore in college already so might be able to help you. Currently I am working on -transferring- to psu UP, so that’s another area I might be able to help. I do commute, but I have stayed overnight on campus at UP about 8 nights so far, so I do have some experience in that area. So…any questions about general college or transferring, I’d be happy to help.

Current major–Biology
Major looking to transfer into: Bio, with a bioengineering minor
high school gpa: over 4.0
college gpa: 3.8

Thank you edawns! We appreciate it!

I have not been accepted yet, but I received the coming days status, and am praying to be admitted to UP. When I visited State College last year I was absolutely blown away by it, it had a certain aura to it. I had visited Temple the day before, and thought it would be tough to beat, but PSU just blew it away. It is just a place where I can see myself living and being happy for four years. I really hope to join you all up in State College for the coming year.

there’s a facebook group that might be interesting to help add to this discussion! just thought i’d pass it along.
