The future of the program

Are there any plans to make MT a major at Northwestern? Does anyone know who it would be best to get in touch with about this?
Thanks.

I thought Northwestern did have a program, but that one had to enter as an acting major and then audition after (before) sophomore year to be allowed in. That means, in essence, that anyone entering Northwestern better be ready to NOT pursue a degree in MT, because (of course) not everyone who auditions will be chosen.

Their MT program is considered a certificate right now. I was just wondering if there were plans to "upgrade" it and make it a 4 year program.

typecastme, i know it's been awhile since you posted this, but i thought this was worth a response, anyway. i don't know if they're ready to discuss it officially yet, but we were told last year by the director of the Theatre program (not the MT program) that implementing a full MT major, rather than the certificate program, was definitely being discussed. The MT program is growing like crazy since AMTP was launched and since they've brought on two incredible new directors.

I'm sure the MT program director, Dominic Missimi, is the person who would know the most, but I just don't know if it's to a point where he can share anything. If I hear anything more, I'll post it.

Here are a couple of recent articles about NU's American Music Theatre Program:

Another bit of info -- the NU student who had the lead in "In the Bubble" won the lead in Spring Awakening's first national tour.

Can anyone give me information on the BFA MT at North Central College. My S is interested in a MT program in the Chicago area and since Northwestern doesn't offer one, he was looking at North Central.

I do not know about North Central College.... but, Northwestern does offer a a MT program. A very good one. The students do not audition for the program until after they have completed one or two years (I think) as music of theatre majors at Northwestern.

Roosevelt University is another school that offers a MT degree in the Chicago area.

well, i found out Northwestern have a MT program but like you said you can't audition until your junior year and if you don't make it then.....well.

Naperville seems like a cute town with deep roots in the arts and close to Chicago so I think that is why he is looking at North Cenrtral. He just wasn't sure about the MT program there.

I'll get him to look into Roosevelt University too.

My S is a freshman theatre major at Northwestern and has loved his first month! His first few weeks have been filled with auditions and wonderful experiences. He looks forward to auditioning for the MT Certificate program in the spring. If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me.

I'm glad your S likes Northwestern. I wish him luck!
Do you know anything aobut North Central College and their MT program as well as Roosevelt? S is looking at NCC, Rosevelt and NWU just to name a few.

No sorry...my S did not research the other schools you mentioned.

I love it here too! If anyone has any questions......you can PM me any time to talk.

Just thought I'd share an interview with Dominic Missimi, the MT program director at Northwestern, and Stuart Oken, previously with Disney, whose concept it was to start AMTP. It's from July 2006, but still very interesting.

Thank you edmondsg for sharing the interview with Dominic Missimi.....loved hearing more about AMTP. Looking forward to (hopefully) seeing you this weekend at Carousel. So disappointed that I can't come back to see M in Hair next month!!!

When I saw that it was about 30 minutes long, I thought I'd never get through all of it, but it flew by. Dominic and Stuart Oken are so committed to the project, and so easy to listen to. Have a good trip - see you Saturday. :-)

Interesting. I love the way NU integrates the students with working professionals. It really puts them on the right track with making contacts before they even graduate.
