Do colleges view gay students as another type of shiny and desirable minority who could add to campus diversity, or do they only care about racial minorities?

I don't think it would be prudent to mention sexual orientation.

Being gay is not a hook. Please, not another coming out essay!

I agree with calgar...not prudent. We like to imagine we are rid of bigots...but that is just not true. However, if you feel that your being gay is really important to your person (important enough to risk your admission to display whatever you need to display) then do so, but proceed with caution.

is it just me or is there a disproportionate amount of gays at elite schools? it seems gay men are generally very smart.

No, we just develop an unusually large Napoleon complex (without the hieght isuues, of course), and a competitive spirit, as a means of self preservation only.
Reading is also something we pansies partake in-before discussing Tony Kushner. I rest my case.

caliboi1313: I've noticed that too. I wouldn't say that gay men are generally very smart (I know plenty that aren't), but I think the # of curious boys at top colleges is in higher proportion than in the general population. (At Berkeley, for example, I've heard students say that their friends are either Asian or gay. lol)

It all depends where you are applying to. If you are applying to BYU or peperdine or something, definately not a hook lol, but somewhere like Berkeley (my dream school) It could help.

heh, you'd be a REAL hit with colleges like university of notre dame huh xD

they don't ask you what your sexual orientation is on college apps.

TragicFlaw: This is only a guess so take it with a grain of salt. If your ECs are Gay-lesbian issues, I don't think you should shy away from listing them -- especially if you've been very involved and had leadership levels. You should show the adcoms what you're passionate in -- that alone is a good hook. However, (and please understand I'm only trying to help) an essay about your awareness/acceptance of your sexual orientation may just not be that unique in the big scheme of things and therefore not help your application file, to be frank.

Good luck to you wherever you choose to apply.
