I’m going to apply Brown as a transfer, majoring in computer science (in A&S).

I’ve no idea if Brown requires any “general education”? It’s said that Brown is so special that it doesn’t have any gen ed… Will my credits of 2 chemistry + 2 physics be wasted? (they are a requirement in my current school as “engineering” student. Though, they two are totally irrelevant from CS core course…)

Thank you!!

You need 30 credits to graduate, and CS requirements alone are not 30 credits; therefore, they will not be a waste.

Thanks for replying!

Here: [Brown CS: Undergraduate Concentration Information](http://cs.brown.edu/degrees/undergrad/concentrations/)
“Transfer Credits
No more than two courses may be transferred in from other institutions for concentration credit in CS A.B. degree programs and no more than three courses may be transferred in for concentration credit for CS Sc.B. degree programs.”

So if I transferred in Brown, majoring in CS Sc.B, I could only have 3 transfer courses in total counted toward the degree? including history, chemistry stuff…

But thanks to the [<a href=“Complete Your Degree | The College | Brown University”>Complete Your Degree | The College | Brown University][/url] you gave me, I now know that I could have 15(general) + 3(CS) course transferred to Brown, which is good news to me!

Just to be sure you are understanding… The concentration is your major. So they don’t all more than 2 or 3 courses in your major, depending on the BA or BS. The courses can be used toward your overall credits. Brown doesn’t have particular requirements for your general credits (excepting writing, now) but they do have total overall credits required, so you can likely use the physics and chem, assuming they are acceptable classes for transfer.

It is also worth noting that you will not have to “retake” courses that you completed which have an equivalent at Brown. If the courses are not counted for credit toward the concentration, the department will expect you to take a higher level course in its place, provided you truly have the expected content knowledge.

The units from your major along with the units from elective courses must add up to 30. That means that you should be fine with having course credit outside of your major.
