The George Washington University-An Incredible Place

tlaktan - one of the kids from our town is a sophomore at GW, and he already has an internship with a US congressman! And they told me another one got a job cutting out newspaper clippings for the White House. Bad part was the job started at 4 am. Good part was that after cutting them out, he had to deliver them to the Oval Office. President never there at the time, but can you imagine as a college student, walking into the Oval office? Fairly cool.

Actually, I was accepted into Notre Dame. If Georgetown does not work out for me, however, I see myself heading to GWU (if accepted)

FYI: My stats are..

1360 SAT I
780-740-700 SAT II
GPA: 3.875 W
Rank: 10/724

ECs: BN Commander, ROTC/All-City Colonel
Mock Trial President/Founder
Young Republicans Party Chair/Co-Founder
World Affairs Council Student Rep
and a few others.. too busy to list them all right now.. lol..

Asian/Korean.. :)

And the whole dangerous atmosphere thing doesn't really fly for me -- I live in Los Angeles. :P

"Young Republicans Party Chair"

O, Bummer!! =)

O, and GW isn't that dangerous, I haven't had any bad experiences except I know some people that have had their purse snatched. I mean, GW is safe for the most part, I just don't want people to think it's okay to go for a stroll through the city at 3 AM alone.

I have a theory after being in DC a fair amount on business, that if you look at some of the homeless around the White House, that some of them are either FBI or Secret Service. I swear I've seen a couple watching people covertly as they lie on a park bench. I know it may sound crazy, but it sure would be a great disguise. After attending the Spy Museum, I'm ready to believe almost anything is possible.

Oh, don't worry Colonial. I'm considered a moderate, and my girlfriend's trying to turn me liberal. LOL. So ... esp. living in Los Angeles, Republicanism in a liberal environment is not such an easy thing. =)

GWU!!!

Class of 2009 here!!! What an awesome place!!!

Thurston is NOT a great dorm. It's a lot of fun, but my brother was smushed into a tiny room with 3 other guys. it was tiny. Plus it's crazy- so much partying that my brother did not study AT ALL. lol. but i doubt that is entirely the fault of the dorm. His dorm this year is AMAZING (sophomore). It was once an apartment and it's huge, kitchen, living room, bathroom, 2 ppl, it's really nice.

Also, while GW is becoming pretty popular, it is not academically strong in everything. The Elliot School for International Affairs (my brother is majoring in IA) has a pretty good reputation, but not all areas of the university are equally affluent. If you want to be involved in Politics and other things in D.C., GW can provide a great opportunity, however i might not choose it if i was undecided as to what i wanted to major in/ focus on in college.

I agree. If you go to GWU, you need to have a decent idea of what you want to do, especially if you are paying the full price tag. Most of the majors are great, and the university as a whole has lots of prestige, but if you have no clue what you want to study, then maybe it's not a good idea to come here.

I live in Hova now, and have lots of friends at Thurston. Although Thurston isn't luxurious or fancy, it is still much nicer than most freshman dorms at other universities. Each room has an individual bathroom(no community showers), it has housekeeping services, two blocks from w-house... However, it's not a palace, and it is pretty small. But, I did a couple of summer camps at other colleges(NYU and JHU) and the dorms were about the same size, if not smaller.

How do the college students qualify American U as opposed to GW?

They both are very alike, in my opinion, but I think that GWU offers better Journalism and International Affairs opportunities. American is in a more residential area, and GW is in the heart of DC. Overall, GW has more "prestige," but that shouldn't be a huge factor in choosing a university. Just visit both of them and draw your own conclusions.

DC is such an exciting place to be. I can still see the GWU flags on the sidewalks as I trudged through their urban campus. There is so much to do in DC I wonder how GWU and GT kids ever studied because while I was an intern there, I avoided work like the plague ;) A friend of mine who also did an internship in DC ended up staying for a grad degree at GWU. Its a great school.
