The Great Debate:Macbook Pro or iMac

So I got a huge case of senioritis in class today. My friend and I started talking about computers for college and debated between a Macbook Pro and an iMac. I know there are tons of threads that talk about this, but none seem to be strictly limited to Apple. So I ask the big question: Macbook Pro or iMac?

Things to consider:
-I know I will never use it to take notes in class (just a pen and paper guy)
-Cost is definitely a factor and an iMac is cheaper but would not mind floating the extra $800 for a macbook if it was significantly better
-Not a computer or engineering major

Thanks everybody.

In my own opinion, a laptop is worth it's weight in gold while in college. You can bring it with you to the library, to a friend's room, outside, to class if you decide the class is boring and want to IM or go on Facebook, etc.

With an iMac, you would be chained to your desk at all times.

Also, best part of a laptop is that you can lie down in bed and still use it.

What skybax said. Think if you're doing a project with people in the library and you're the only one who can't bring your computer because it's stationary. Also, then you can bring it to/from school to do work on it during breaks. It's more convenient in general.

Those are both extremely valid points. It is just so hard to choose. It seems the portability of a laptop results in the computer becoming more prone to damage which can be expensive; especially in the case of an Apple. That is the only thing that keeps me on the fence in deciding on a notebook or desktop.

-There will be times when you have to do group work in the library. The laptop is perfect for this situation.

-Sometimes, your roommates may be too noisy in the room and it's nice to be able to take your laptop to a quiet place outside of your dorm room, to get some work done.

-It's also very convenient to have a laptop for entertainment--just bring it to your bunk and watch a movie, surf the net, instant message your friends.

-It's also very nice to be able to stick it in your backpack and bring it home during breaks.

-It's also easy to hide or put your laptop in a safe place in your room if your roommates decide to invite a bunch of friends into the room.

If you're worried about damage get applecare

My 2 cents is as follows: don't underestimate weight when buying a laptop. I know Macbook pros are heavier than regular macbooks. A weighty laptop is basically a desktop.

An iMac can fall off your desk and break as well...

This is probably the most expensive option but also the best. Get a Macbook Pro with an external monitor keyboard and mouse. When you're in your room, plug it into the monitor and it's like a desktop. You can easily take it to the library if you need to.

I would have to agree. I have a 22" external monitor and it is absolutely heavenly.

i would buy a macbook. they're not that expensive, the new models look really good and the difference between a macbook and a macbook pro has greatly decreased. in any case, definitely buy a laptop for college, be it a mac or a pc, a macbook or a macbook pro. it gives you greater mobility, you can go to the library to write that paper when you cannot concentrate in your room, bring it to your friend's rooms to watch movies, etc.

Get a cheaper desktop and a Netbook to take to class, etc.

I'm going through the same decision process right now. Unless your going into graphic design or another major that is similar, you may not necessarily need a pro. You can get a nice macbook thats 2.4 ghz and 4gb of memory which is more than what is needed for school. Also Apple has the new led cinema displays that connect to your macbook, so you can use your laptop when your away, but be able to connect to a full screen monitor when at your dorm.
