The Great Debate

Whether it's Policy or Public Forum,Original Oratory or Duo Interpretation

This is the thread to discuss the 2013-2014 debate season.

Excited for the September PF topic :D

Nuclear prolif is always fun innit

What are the best websites for debate (policy, public forum)? What are some competition sites?

Yeah. It’ll be my first year debating (I’ll be in Open though, not novice). I’ll be doing PF also. 6 days till liftoff.

@pwalsh
I’m confused as to what you’re asking?
For chatting?
For sources?
For scores?

I’m going to be doing policy with a friend of mine.

Atlantic, Websites for Debate prep (prompts, videos) and the debate competitions (regional, nationals, internationals).

I’m still a bit confused but…

Main Debate Site: [National Forensic League: Speech, Debate, Interp, Honor Society](http://www.nationalforensicleague.org/)
Main Debate Community (mostly Policy and LD): [Latest News - Cross-X.com](http://www.cross-x.com/)

State Organizations (if your school competes in the NFL, you’ll belong to one of these): [State Organizations: Speech, Debate: National Forensic League](http://www.nationalforensicleague.org/aspx/nav.aspx?navid=181&pnavid=178)

Tournament Sites I’m aware of:
[The Joy of Tournaments](http://www.joyoftournaments.com/)
https://www.tabroom.com/index/index.mhtml</a>
[SpeechWire Tournament Services - Forensics Tournament Software - Speech, Debate, Congress](http://www.speechwire.com/)

(more tournaments may be listed on your state website.)

As far as Prompts/Videos, you basically need to find videos on your own (if you’re in Public Forum, I’d look up “South Dakota Public Forum Debate” on youtube)
And evidence basically depends on which resource centers your school subscribes to so I can’t really help you on that

debate here is much more different from debate in the US. Im currently applying for ICJ in a local THIMUN affiliated conference and for Deputy Chair at THIMUN. Really excited :D

Congrats! :D

Has anyone gone to any tourney’s yet?

Not sure if I wanna go to one in a couple of weeks. I dislike the LD topic.

Congressrepresentin’

I won’t be going to Yale (too poor), but my first national tourney this year is Blue Key.

I’m gonna start in October so I have time to prepare my cases. But I’m really excited for the PF topic!

I do British Parliamentary or Mace style…

But hopefully I’m going to trial for the England World Schools team this year or next, so that could be good :)

November Topics Have Been Released:

Public Forum (Nov only) - The benefits of domestic surveillance by the NSA outweigh the harms.

Lincoln Douglas (Nov & Dec) - In the United States criminal justice system, truth-seeking ought to take precedence over attorney-client privilege

Policy Debate (same all year) - The United States federal government should substantially increase its economic engagement toward Cuba, Mexico, or Venezuela.

I did policy for the last two years.

LD over here.

This is my second year. It feels weird being a varsity member now, considering that last year, I was a novice. It’s been fun teaching the novices how to do LD, and I really like the compulsory voting topic (so far, it’s led to some pretty good debates). I broke to quarters at my first tournament of the year as well, so overall, it’s been a pretty good start to the season.

Based on a nationwide vote, the February 2014 Public Forum topic is,
Resolved: The Supreme Court rightly decided that Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act violated the Constitution.

After a nationwide vote, the NFHS has announced that the 2014-15 Policy Debate topic will be:

Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its non-military exploration and/or development of the Earth’s oceans.

I’m not doing any debates in February :frowning: It’s a bummer, considering the fact that I like this PF topic way more than last month’s Sahel region topic.
