The great shipping quandary

Good news is Aludaughter can move in on Sept. 3rd. Bad news is, I have no clue what the deal is with shipping her stuff there in advance, which we have to do as we cannot carry it all out from California.

Here's what I read. Frist takes US Mail. UPS delivers to the dorm. UPS doesn't deliver on Saturday. We should not send anything that will get there more than a week before her arrival.

So here's my question. Big boxes are best sent via UPS. If I send stuff UPS and it gets there let's say the 29th of August, what happens to it until we get there? Does the dormitory have a storage room? Or does UPS stuff that can't be delivered because no one is home yet also go to Frist? And do I really have to wait to ship until it's one week before Sept. 3rd?

Thanks, from Alumother who will be renting a big car to haul suitcases and daughter from Manhattan to Princeton and then drive boxes from Frist to Bloomberg...

I thought the housing info came with directions on shipping stuff? Did you look at that already? I think you can UPS stuff and they'll just store it for you, provided it doesn't get there TOO early.

(Are you sure that UPS doesn't deliver on Saturdays? They've always delievered on Saturdays to me)

They said no Saturdays....I will sort through all those papers again.

shudders

are you flying from california? if you tried, you could probably take it all with you. i managed it last year.

You don't know my nesting instinct and its impact on AluDs room furnishings...Yes we are flying but luggage restrictions are bad these days and also we are making a stop in NYC and I don't want to carry 3 suitcases and 4 boxes up in the elevator and back down again...jtiger08 how does the mail delivery work?

didnt thay say they'll store anything so long as it doesnt get there before september 6th?

September 3rd is our arrival date due to a little thing called OA. You guys are letting me down!

As a California mother of 2 Princeton sons, I have shipped many packages, including care packages and warmer clothes, to my sons via FedEx Ground c/o their college offices. FedEx Ground rates are competitive with UPS and the FedEx offices are more convenient for me. The packages are signed for by someone in the college office and they send an e-mail to the student for them to pick-up it up. You should have received the college office address. For Butler, it is Jane Doe, c/o Butler College Office, Wu Hall, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ 08544. You also list the telephone # for the college office. Butler's college office is 609-258-4955. I Recommend that you ship boxes just prior to your departure for NY. FedEx Ground estimates 5 business days to Princeton. There is no delivery Sat or Sun when the college office is closed. Perhaps, a friend can deliver your boxes to FedEx or UPS if the timing doesn't work for you before you leave for NY. You can fill out the delivery slips in advance. Recommend insurance although I have never had a problem--you are covered for $100; extra insurance is extra. The college office will store it in their offices until your daughter comes to pick it up. It is much more convenient to have it delivered to the college office. However, as you know, Butler College is closer to Frist than others, such as Forbes. This way, your daughter doesn't have to carry it from Frist. It you have already bought bedding, pillows, and a mattress pad you can ship it in 1 box. Good Luck! P.S. One of my sons is in Bloomberg (in a quad) this year and is very excited about the location and layout of the rooms. Because of its central location, bamboo flooring, etc. it is very desirable.

i wouldnt expect ups to hold onto it-- they dont run through the university at all- they just dropped packages outside of our dorm room door.. the easiest thing might to just bring the basics with you and then ship the stuff once you get home and aludaughter is there to get the package

Thanks for the responses. So, to confirm. If I were to have sent packages to Aludaughter at her Butler address, and if we show up on Saturday September 3, there will be no way to get our hands on those packages?

To put it another way. Do I have to bring on the airplane anything I want her to have Saturday the 3rd and again when they return from OA? Or can I ship something and pick it up somewhere on Sept. 3rd?

Thank you in advance for the detailed information:)

Honestly, she really won't need anything until she gets back from OA, so there's not much of a need to ship it before the Sept. 6th date (hence the reason why that date's there in the first place, I think). Since we won't even be in our rooms until Sept. 9th, we'll only need whatever's necessary for OA/CA. That's one of the reasons why my parents aren't showing up until the 9th/10th with most of my stuff: it won't serve me until after returning from OA. That's how I'm seeing it, but maybe I'm missing something...shrug
