The Great UCSD Point System quick question :)

so i have been reading a lot of posts and i had a question:
the UCSD point system.. it gives you points for things you do in your highschool, etc..(it sounds wrong, but you know what i mean)

so my first question is: does anyone know the cutoff for 2010? i read http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/884016-im-waiting-list-ucsd-what-my-chances.html
that
i called them today, and they said you needed like 7744 points to be admitted and i had 7738... :/
this post was in march 2010...
so does this mean that if you are ABOVE this certain point you will get accepted and if you are below, waitlisted/rejected..
or do they do the whole shuffle thingy and just grab all the top people?

thank all!

EDIT also. can someone "predict" the points for Fall 2011.. i figure its around 7780... but yeah...

given that i have a 8100-8400 (w/ job included) so i have a decent chance right? or does points not matter when comparing SAT scores...
what i am saying is.. if i have a 1500 SAT, and 600/650 SAT II, and a fairly high GPA.. and my points are above by say 200 points from the cut off line.. are the chances of being admitted high?

last question;)
you guys know the whole award point for UCSD..if you have awards we give you points or something, right.
well for my school, i received two awards, (one for Spanish 3, and one for Spanish 4)..does that qualify as points or do these not count?

bummpppppinnnnnnnn it!!

I wouldn’t give yourself any points for your spanish awards not because you arent deserving but just to be very very conservative with your points total so that if worst comes to worst you can have a very reasonable total in case the admissions officers are strict on giving points away.

for example my conservative total is a 7940. My reasonable total is at 8340. That way I know if the admission counselors get stingy with the points I still have a great chance to get in.

Ive heard this years total might actually be 7800+. But you having 8100+ you should be good.

FutureENTSurgeon

i have one more question if you could please answer… or anyone else here.

my school is quite qualified in terms of the state tests and all… we are the 8th rank or something and our schedule is a 4X4

in other words we have 4 classes per quarter (although we have a semester UC system)… that being said… how would i be able to get 40+ UC courses? it doesn’t seems possible for my school …
i currently have 26 classes and that is with only 3-5 non a-g courses
that being said does this mean i do not get the 500 points for 40+ a-g courses.
it seems a bit unfair IMHO.

i am going to email UCSD, but in the mean time can someone try to answer this question.

so on the UCSD scoring guide Google Spreadsheet we see that 40+ courses gives you the 500 points. but how is this calculated?is it even possible to have 40+? because there are still school related NON a-g courses required to graduate…

Of course its possible to have 40+. My school is just like yours we have 4 classes for around 4.5-5 months and we get permanent grades every 10 week. Then in January we have 4 new classes.
This is how it breaks down for me:
8th- 2 (Algebra 1)
9th-11 (Health Class is not an A-G but we still had to take it)
10th-14
11th-14
12th-10 (No A-G classes left, I completed all available at my school)
Total= 51 A-G Classes

Every at our school you can take a maximum of 8 classes=16 grades per year as opposed to the regular 6 classes=12 grades that schools on the system system have. FYI Freshman year i was in football in the fall thats why I only had 12 A-G that year. In addition, all four years i was in track and field so thats why I never had the full 16 A-G classes in one year.

FutureENTSurgeon
wait so its based on the number of grades you receive, not on the course you take.
what i mean is
say i took AP Calculus BC, which is at my school a semester (we get two grades for it) like your school… we switch in jan, right… so does that mean i took 2 A-G courses for it?

it sounds confusing to me, let me simplify lol!
AP Calc BC Quarter 1: A
AP Calc BC Quarter 2: A
Switch to another class…
so this gives me 2 A-G classes, right?

i think you mentioned this in your last paragraph, but im not 100% sure i understand…

dammit i should have waited… now i sent a bogus email to the folks at UCSD asking them if we “people of 4X4 schedules” are “modified” to fit the UCSD point system or something… stupid huh? dammit my first email to my dream school and its stupid!

haha of course I thought you could assume that. 1 Class=2 Grades you recieve= 2 Semester A-G

UCSD gives you 500 points for 40+ A-G Semesters which equals 20+ A-G approved courses.

Looks like all the confusion is cleared up. Am I right?

oh yeah… thanks for the help! i have 53!

Are we sure that 40+ is 500 points?
Because I have 42… so that would really help

JeSuis
according to this:
[ucsd score](http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pKB1yD5iQn_8wqH5bhMkhZw)
yes

but to be sure… i emailed yesterday and i hope they email back…

i also found more info at a 2005 post:

and further on the website: (this is the confusing part)

form what i can understand through this piece:

15 units = 30 grades (or 30 A-G courses)? and to put a good range they would give us 250 points for this… and then the rest (40+) would be 500…

but i have a question too:

this is on UCSD’s page, if we calculate the percentage we get a 8% entrance… so this clearly shows that there are more spots available, right?
and isnt the number the same every year… 48,000 and 3600?

first of all you are mistaken about the 8%. UCSD accounts for people choosing other school over UCSD. Their Yield is around 20% every year so they admit around 5 times as many applicants as they have to account for their yield.

and also What the hell?

I have a problem with the low income portion.

I thought low income was defined as making under 45k/year? not 60k as you mention. I wasnt aware they give you any points for having under 60k like you mention above. Can you please provide me a link so i can see myself?
http://www.ucop.edu/news/factsheets/2010/freshman_admit_profile_2010.pdf
Botton of page 3- clearly defines low income as below 45k/year for Fall 2009 and Fall 2010

Disregard my request for a link. I didnt see that you already posted one.

Well if I account for low income and single parent household, I have 8248 points. Does it count as single parent household even if my mom gets spousal and child support from my dad?

FutureENTSurgeon
i posted a link? the ucsd score link doesnt provide details neither does their website. all it says is they give consideration to family income and the family size.

im guessing a family of 3-4 and an income of 60,000 would give you points? maybe the 40,000’s give you full points?

I’m an only child. Ugh

spatel:

1- after I posted my request for a link in post #12 i quickly asked you to disregard (post #13) because I didnt see your link till later

2-i dont think they give you half points. I think its all or nothing 45k/year or under equals full, 45,001+/year equals 0. I know that harsh but i think thats the way it is.

jesuis:
yes, i think it does count all the child support she gets from your dad. I’m very sure on this.

JeSuis
i had emailed the UC’s for information about the number of A-G courses we needed… here i their reply… its quite smart and elaborate… they do not want us to know anything about the point system…

but one thing confuses me now… on the Freshman Admission Profile 2010 http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/campuses/files/sandiego.pdf

there are more 50+ courses takers which confuses me a bit… do we need 50 courses or 40?
since the 6 classes per year people can take up to 12 classes per year, and a total of 48 A-G from 9-12 and about 2 from 7-8 grade also confuses me. however, im sure its 40+ because there are still courses that the HS must allow that is non-A-G so that is how i come up with 40+ and the UC’s dont have a whole abundance at each HS to offer A-G courses only so 40+ is a great place to be!

i have a couple of questions about some other things on the point system:

do you consider head chef to be a Leadership role? like the ones UCSD wants… it isnt VP or Pres, but Head Chef is just as important…and it is leadership. i guess this would be considered major leadership or minor… im unsure how to place this on the point system… i have given 300 but im not too sure…

what about Jobs… the UCSD google spreadsheet doesnt give jobs, but the other scoring guide does…/ (the second one that is in quotes is from 2005, so im not too sure)

back to leadership: what if you have one major, and one minor… /

this reminds me that FutureENTSurgeon the second one that says 60K is low income is from 2005 so there must have been some changes :)
