This was mentioned in another thread that's about transportation, so I figured I'd make a new thread to get an answer, and and and....it helps the thread count. Yay!

Anyway, is it true you have to pay to join the gym on campus? Like...just fitness stuff in Appel or Noyes or wherever? Because I'm looking at transferring and have just become accustomed to our free rec center...so I was wondering if (a) you really do have to pay, and (b) if that's true, is there any place on campus that is free? Thanks a lot.

Just like what was posted in the other thread: yes you do have to pay for the fitness centers. It is $135 per year, check out their website http://fitness.cornell.edu/pages/membership/joining.asp. There is no where on campus that has free facilities, unless you are a varsity athlete. I wouldnt let a $135/year gym cost keep you from coming to such a great university.

Yeah its a really good deal. It's a lot less than I paid for my YMCA membership back home, and the facilities are much better. You also get access to a lot of stuff that most people dont use, like free fitness counseling and diet/nutrition consultations.

spn2200 or nebody else that knows....what do the varsity athletes get???

Varsity athletes have exclusive use of the Friedman Center. I would think the strength and conditioning programs are mandatory if you're playing a sport.

I spent a summer at Cornell and wasn't very pleased with the gyms. My dorm was on west campus, and there were some very small, very cramped workout places at the bottom of a couple of the Class of dorms. I also went to Helen Newman on North Campus, which was pretty old and also really busy (even in the summer!). I went to one more gym close to the armory, which was pretty nice. Anyway, things might have changed, I was there in 2003. Having to pay sucks though.
