<p>Where I work, I guarantee you, this would be summarily rejected for its confusing nature.</p>
<p>I should have said lengthy clause, rather than multiple clauses. We have been trained by professionals not to separate subject and verb with lengthy clauses. Is it forbidden? Of course not. But as you pointed out above, the most effective way to write this clause would be something like “within your chosen BHCS honors program”</p>
<p>And common usage does not always mean best or appropriate. I do not believe that “biochemistry” can contribute to anything. Research in the area of biochemistry can contribute. Biochemical researchers contribute. </p>
<p>If you feel this represents an example of superior or even effective writing , that’s your opinion. I disagree. I’m not saying I would have done better, I’m saying they should put more thought into an essay question.</p>
