@lawyer 101: I know that my counselor was called by the Harvard Admissions Office and was asked about my grades (that I was finishing strong, etc.) If your counselor was contacted like that, I’m sure that your counselor would have mentioned something like that.

@lawyer101: First off, I forgot to congratulate you. Secondly, I think it would have had maximum effect if there were questions about your academic abilities. If your grades seemed low, they didn’t know your exact rank, or you SATs were questionable, i think the valedictorian status would have a positive effect. If you were already stellar, nothing has changed except your title.

I disagree that the WL is just to fill holes. I think fitting into a hole is kinda the same as being a URM or being a legacy, by boosting your chances. If all they did was plug holes, I don’t think they would need to deliberate for this long. Why else would we send in updates? The updates probably aren’t strong enough to fill any significant holes, so I really think that fitting a hole just makes an applicant that much more appealing.

Just a question I want to throw out to everyone…how many of you guys have had Harvard admissions contact your GC?

Also, about sending in updates, I sent mine on Thursday and got a response thanking me and saying it would be discussed in committee, even though it seems that they’ve stopped taking updates. Any ideas?

guitar; I have had no contact with Harvard at all besides for emailing them my update-letter. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Same with me. No contact except for sending in my update. Not really sure if more contact makes a difference or not. I don’t mean filling holes in that way. Someone who plays tuba would get in if there aren’t enough tuba players, a drama addict might get in if another turns Harvard down. They’re looking for specific things to fill the class. If they are looking for super academics who maintain the highest GPA possible, then it may help.

You are lucky Harvard is contacting your guidance counselor. My son’s guidance counselor has been very little help through his whole senior year. She is a young woman who appears to consider her career as just a job instead of a calling to guide the careers of young men and women. She tried to discourage my son from striving to be number one by telling him colleges don’t care what your rank is. Good thing we didn’t believe her cause I don’t think he would have made it on the waiting list of Harvard without it.

Hi guys, my daughter is finished with school as of today. Rehersal on Friday and graduation on Saturday. She survived 4 APs and her brain is still intact. We have talked about how silly it is to have 2 to 4 weeks of class after APs, it’s like what’s the point. How do you prepare with it coming earlier for you than it does for schools like her’s that go back in early August?

What’s their point though? I just don’t understand what possesses people to do something so stupid? Don’t you have more important and worthwhile things to do than go on a forum and play pretend?

lol, wow. you could have at least waited till tomorrow to pretend to have gotten in…

maybe they were filling a “spot” when those two were accepted.

Of course they were. Good detecting there, simply waiting.

Oh Wow! Sidewinder and CowboyNY got their calls from Harvard at mid-night last night even though the admissions office told us that decisions would not be given until Thursday.

They must be very special.

Hmmm. I wonder what their college of matriculation was before they got their calls - perhaps, Detroit Community College for the Advancement of Janitorial Skills?

I’m not on the Harvard WL but at other ivie’s WL so thought that was interesting…

Pearling:

Thanks for the info.

I read post#1439 by VassarMom and think it is odd she posted at 5am this morning that her daughter got into Harvard given that I personally spoke with the admissions office yesterday at 4:45pm and was told decisions would be communicated on Thursday.

Perhaps, VassarMom shares a trailer with Sidewinder and CowboyNY.
