I was fairly confident that I would be admitted.... that is.... until today when I recieved a letter telling me they couldn't take me. I know that it is a competetive program, but I was a little shocked to see that I wasn't admitted. It seems now that my willingness to go to this university has dropped significantly as I now no longer have a high probability of good dorms or a location on the honors floor at South Quad.

From what I've heard and read in these threads before, generally speaking, 3.8+ and 1400+ pretty much guarantee admission (or maybe I've misread). I have a 3.875 umich gpa and 1440, and almost all of my classes are AP's. In addition, I think my awards/essays/recs/etc were pretty good if not strong.

I guess I'm just really distressed because now I won't be around many of my friends that will go since I'm almost certain that's where they are all going to be. Is there any way I can get this changed before freshman year or should I start praying for different schools?

Yeah...that's always a downer when you don't get into something you want. But I encourage you to not discard UM simply because you didn't get in to Honors. Its seriously not that big of a deal at all. The only thing you'll be missing out on are Great Books and Honors sections of big lecture classes. Housing w/ other Honors kids is fun, but the rest of the campus doesn't have leprosy...and nothing is stopping you from going to see your friends in Squad whenever you want. There will be days when you may even appreciate the separation from the honors world.

I'm not guarenteeing anything, but depending on the section, GSI's and profs will let you in their honors sections if there is room. So...all is not lost...I hope you'll still consider UM in the fall.

hehe...good dorms...they don't exist my friend...so scratch that idea from your head immediately.

Whoever said 3.8+ and 1400+ gets you into honors easily was heavily smoking the crack. Over 65% of this school was in the top 5% of their HS class and 25% of students got 1400+ on their SAT. Now, consider this alongside the fact that only about the top 10% of LSA freshmen make it into honors. This means you better have about a 3.95 and 1500 to have a good chance. Both your 3.875 and 1440 would have been below average stats for the honors college. This isn't so bad though, if you try hard enough you can still get into south quad (even an honors floor) after the school year starts because people always transfer out because of a conflict with their roommate. Also, it's pretty easy to still get into honors sections of classes with an override. You can get anything done at this school if you just put a little effort into it, we're not THAT bureaucratic. Life is definitely not over if you arent in honors, other dorms are still sweet and you'll still get an awesome education, so don't worry about it. You probably just misread someone's post and that gave you false expectations. It's more their fault for that.

Crack...ann arbor......THAT CAN'T BE!!!

Yeah...i would also advise that you should never feel as though you "deserve" or are "entitled" to something. ESPECIALLY when it comes to grades....if you feel you deserve something, you might be setting yourself up for a big wake up call.

Yea, I probably overreacted. Again, I'll probably still go to umich. I'd just like to know if this has any strong negative impact on my future at the school such as getting into ross or as you mentioned honors section classes. Still though, when I see many of my other friends with similar stats get in, it's a little disheartening.

By the way, does Umich ever reverse decisions. It would seem to me that many of those accepted would have higher chances of attending ivies and such.... yea, I guess I'm just kind of desperate....

I'm pretty sure Ross couldn't care less about underclass LSA honors. A reg. LSA kid with a 3.7 is gonna get in over an LSA honors kid w/ a 3.4. Honors sections are by definition for honors students, but a simple email to a professor may yeild you a course override. Just be prepared to reassure the prof that you are willing and able to do the work.

Email honors and ask about an appeal, or about applying while a freshman. I'm not sure if that's possible, but someone in honors might shed some more light.

A lot of kids get into the ivies or just decide they'd rather be in regular LSA than honors (it happens quite often, showing that honors isn't the end-all, be-all of academics here), which is why they have a waitlist. If you haven't landed a spot on the waitlist, I don't think there's hope. Maybe you could write in order to get on the waitlist though.

You know, not getting into Honors may be the best thing that ever happened to you until now. ;-) Seriously, don't fret. You're not missing much except for the South Quad experience, and that can be gained through eating meals here and hanging out on honors halls like some of my friends did. Honors is a mindset, not just a program!
