The Hotchkiss School Q&A

If you are interested in learning more about Hotchkiss from the perspective of a current student, please comment any questions you may have.

I can also comment as I am a student at HKiss.

Are most dorms at Hotchkiss singles or doubles. Also are they comfortable?

Majority are singles, and yes they are comfortable. The mattresses are fine, the rooms are well sized, and the desks are adequate for homework, etc. Many of the dorms have different styles and people have different opinions on each one. One thing I will say is that Dana has the best views.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
Any student/alum/parent/friend/staff is free to field questions as well, but do not ask to be chanced here. It puts these students in a difficult situation of wanting to answer questions, but they have no clue what your chances would be.

I’ve heard the town of Lakeville can be a bit dull… So I was wondering what they do on the weekends? Also, how does the school incorporate new 10th graders to be apart of the school community  Thank you!

Well, Lakeville itself is hardly even a town, there’s nothing really there. But the town of Millerton, NY is only 3 miles away, and has a couple good restaurants, a cute coffee shop, CVS, grocery store, etc. The school runs a free shuttle bus to Millerton on Sundays, which lots of kids use. As far as what to do on weekends, there are classes most Saturdays and then sports on Saturday afternoons. Saturday night there is pretty much always some planned event on campus for all students – a dance, a movie, or some special event (the annual visit from the hypnotist is always very popular). On Sunday, most kids tend to sleep late and have a bit of a lazy day, hanging out with friends and doing homework. If the weather’s nice, a walk in the Hotchkiss woods, a swim in the lake, or a round of golf are all common occurrences too.

Thank you @soxmom that sounds really awesome!

Hi, I was wondering what it’s like to be an incoming 10th grader? Is it hard to make friends because everyone probably has their own friend groups? Also, what is it like living there? Anyone else from Texas?

Has the cell phone reception in Lakeville improved? It was quite terrible when I was there last (about 3 years ago).

@sgopal2 No, the cell reception is still quite poor.

@iakhtar New 10th graders (lower mids) are received well by the others and there are many that do just that. It is not too hard to make friends as most are friendly and open to having new people enter their friend groups. There are people from Texas at Hotchkiss.

is the wifi turned off at a certain time?

@iakhtar ‘student’ wi-fi is turned off at 10:45 on all school nights, but is kept on until 11:45 on Saturday night,

What is the average SSAT score to get in? I couldn’t find a score on any website. Also, how many EC’s did you have? What was your GPA? Is it hard to get accepted? Thanks

@StandardizedGirl Boarding School Review reports an 85% average SSAT.

@AppleNotFar Yeah, I saw that. But the problem is, it says that the average percentile of Exeter and Andover are 85 too, but it actually is higher than that (93rd percentile I think). I guess it says that it should be above the 85th percentile, but the average may be higher.

@StandardizedGirl BSR lists a 94% for Exeter, and nothing for Andover. At least as of a few minutes ago.

@AppleNotFar Ohh you are completely right! Thanks a lot! I was just trying to sort schools by looking at their SSAT scores from BSR and it just said >85% for many schools, but I guess they updated it and now I can see specifically. Thanks again!

@StandardizedGirl EC’s are a good thing to have for any boarding school, but all schools want to see that you are passionate about what you do and they dislike filling up your resume with EC’s you could care less about. Last year, if I recall correctly, the admission rate was either 18% or 20% so to answer your question, yes it is quite difficult to get in.

@AppleNotFar Yes why does Andover not have a spot on BSR?
