I think soxmom is pretty much right on all points here. Kevin and Malcolm are similar in substance but different in style. The thing that both men possess is a masterful grasp of the English language. Why not? One was a Rhodes Scholar, the other a Ph.D in English from Princeton. Each communciates beautifully. Having such a rare talent at the head of any institution is a vital sign of the wonderful health of that institution.

I was saddened to see Malcolm walk away from THS but pleased to see Kevin stepping into the big shoes left behind.

@prepschoolplease Since I just finished my prep year, I only had the chance to have Mr. McKenzie for one year. Even though it was such a short period of time, I know I and many of my peers will miss him. But when the administration was looking for a new headmaster, we had candidates speak including Dr. Hicks. When Dr. Hicks started to speak, right off the bat my vote was for him (I mean if we could have voted). Like soxmon said, he is very approachable, warm, and has a sense of humor that makes his speeches entertaining. I’m excited to see him start.

My DD will arrive for pre-season training for math team as a prep. We might need to stay for 2 nights in the area—where do parents stay? Which town? Should we book for room now?

There’s a whole list of hotels and B and Bs one the school website (look in the admission section). The Interlaken is closest to school, just a couple hundred yards down the hill. Unfortunately, places to stay near school is a real problem, as there just isn’t very much. If you haven’t already booked something for parents weekend, you’re going to end up very far away.

@Ipohmom Like they said, booking needs to be done early because there aren’t many nearby. My parents for example ended up having to book a hotel 40 minutes away because they booked too late. But the Interlaken is a popular place to stay because it’s so close.

For some reason, on websites where employees review their workplace, employees complained about how the faculty didn’t care about anything but there paycheck. I am a but nervous, even though I know this (hopefully) isn’t true. Does anybody have comments on this?

@prepschoolplease That is not true at all! My teachers were all passionate about what they were teaching. And their help goes beyond the classroom. If they did only care about the paycheck, they don’t show it.

If anyone wants more questions answered, etc, I am a recent graduate (May 2013) and have lived at Hotchkiss my entire life (my parents are teachers). I don’t know everything, but I have experienced plenty, so I will try to answer any questions you might have.
