The huge (untrue) myth about Berkeley.... (and most other public universities)

^^^ Yeah, that is impressive, considering that one of my high school teachers started the year out the by saying, "I won't know all your names until December" for a class of 25. (He just points to the poor kid and calls him "you" :p)

Half of my upper div class were taught by Grad students.

You better hope you get a good one because there are plenty of anal ones. Yay for Berkeley! Its not quite as sucky as you believe it to be. I personally don't care about the personal relationship, I just want the class to move faster and for their to be more testing or more thorough testing than it has currently.

half your uppper divs taught by graduate students? What department were you in?

Hm...sounds hard to get good recommendations then.

It's a ridiculous occurence. That doesn't really happen. If I were in a class of five and I never saw my prof outside of class or talked much besides about the subject matter during the class itself, would my recs be good?

Like you can really get to know a student from talking to them a few times a week in office hours. Most people I see just ask retarded questions to waste time. Its retarded and pointless, you cant get to know a porfessor just through office hours. The more testing you have the more objective his rating of you can because he can see how you write and whatnot.

Millions of people get recs from profs, its just stupid and pointless. Berkeley is a crappy school. Deal with it.

I'm dealin', buddy. No worries about that. If Berkeley is so crappy, what's good? Berkeley isn't one of 30 schools worth talking attending?

Virtually every school except podunk U or a community college. There's a reason its been dropping down in US News rankings (and not just in terms of absolute rank, but also in terms of academic reputation).

Uh, care to show us some numbers? Peer assesment has dropped to what, about 4.5? 4.7? The US news formula changes yearly to promote magazine sales. Do you really think school quality changes so drastically yearly? Do you not realize the politics behind the ranking system? You're smarter than that.

LiberalCensors,

What was your major, and what kinds of upper div classes were taught by grad students? In 3 years at UCLA, I took many many upper div classes and not a single one was taught by a TA. UCLA can't be that different...

By the way LiberalCensors, I went to office hours and now have at least three professors who wrote letters of rec for me. One of them has emailed me on occasion to check up on me here in Japan, and remembers details of conversations.

I wouldn't call it pointless, considering that he helped me with my applications to grad school as well.

sakky, you mentioned the formation of an honors college, are you familiar with the program at UCLA? I'm not really, but I was wondering if that was what you meant.

No, Berkeley's peer assessment score is 4.8, which ranks it 6th behind the perennial top 5 of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and MIT.
