congrats to everyone here for resisting the pressure from family and friends to go to Berkeley...UCLA provides a waaaaaay better college experience

^
You hope...:p

LOL Aim, whatever you have to tell yourself buddy. I don't see how a school filled with hippies and tokers for engineers garners more prestige than UCLA.

These schools are similar in funding, research, GPA's, employment and mostly everythign else. So I don't see how someone can spout off one is better than the other.

Even if perception, opinion or anecdotes were the only measuring sticks used, the schools come out evenly matched.

Man, this is pathetic. If you have to prop yourself up by saying that Cal is just a school filled with hippies and tokers then you're pretty bad off. Facts are facts, Cal has more prestige. Its just that simple. Its older, its the original university of california, and as far as I know there has never been an acedemic ranking that put UCLA over Cal. I think you can argue that UCLA is as good as Cal, or even argue that its better than Cal, but you can't argue that it has more prestige. Its the same thing with Cal vs Stanfurd. You can argue that Cal is better but you look foolish if you try to say Cal has more prestige than Stanfurd. That said, who cares? They're all amazing schools which I DO think are on the same playing field. I don't know why you feel like you need to attack Cal, it really doesn't help your cause.

My overly generalized statement is in response to the generalizations made about UCLA.

What's more, you are sadly misinformed my tree-hugging, birkenstock-wearing granola-crunching poster, academic ranking does not equal prestige, but is rather just one facet of it.

Here are just a few tidbits for you:

Entrance to Harvard Law School 2004
UCLA 43, Berkeley 38

Anderson (UCLA) versus Haas (Berk) for business school according to business week 2004 rankings:
UCLA #14, UCB #17

University Medical Centers, US News 2004 Ranking:
UCLA #5, UCB...Ooooh yeah...you don't have one!

Total R&D expenditures at universities and colleges,
ranked by fiscal year 2002 total R&D expenditures:
UCLA: $787,598, UCB: $474,746

c'mon, are you really trying to say that UCLA has more pretige than Cal? If so, you're sad. Like I said, prestige doesn't mean much, but it is what it is, and Cal has more of it. Sorry. Take a minute to let that sink in. Your school is not as prestigious as mine, and yet I care less than you do about it. And if you want to talk about generalizations I could just as easily say that you are a.......wait, there aren't really any generalizations about UCLA because nobody cares enough to think of it in that way. BTW, I DO love granola.

First of all nub, drop the condescending tone.

Second of all, work on those reading comprehension skills...or even easier, just plain ole reading skills. Look back at ANY of my posts, when did I ever say UCLA was MORE prestigious?

You serve but one purpose here and that is to be a troll. You have nothing to offer of any value or use..why are you even on this board?

Prestige is a subjective process and hard to qualify in any tangible way. Instead of offering proof that attests to supposed UCB prestige, you just post inane and inflammatory remarks.

What's more, I think all that granola chewing has loosened up whatever grey matter you haven't already toked into oblivion. ;)

fighting over the internet is pointless. it's not like u are going to change each other's mind about whichever school.

on the other hand, I DO believe that people shouldnt go trolling on either board. You can make a "I chose Cal over UCLA" thread on ur own board and I wouldn't mind. okay? thanks

Easy "nub" (ouch!) You're right, I haven't posted anything as insightful as calling an entire population of students "hippies and tokers and tree huggers." You're obviously a genius, so I would never dream of condescending to you, but you posted that Cal doesn't have as much prestige as UCLA (post #63). Now, I'm not nearly as smart as you, but if Cal does't have as much prestige as UCLA, wouldn't that mean that UCLA has more. Is this too complex for you to understand? Don't be mad at me because you go to a school known for basketball and I go to a school known for academics.

"I go to a school known for academics" --> "You're obviously a genious"

100% pure comedy gold.

Just because I can't spell doesn't mean that my school isn't known for academics.(:

Um dude,

Not having more can mean they are..now stay with me here...EQUAL. LOL

Do you take the SYB to UCB?

UCLA students can't pick on Berkeley students, so they must resort to picking on high schoolers that are going to Berkeley next year.

Nah, we're supposed to be buddies. Me likey UCLA.

I can see you have a bone to pick with Cal. That's alright, I would too. But, just for your own hapiness I'd look into therapy. I think you can get some of that aggression out that way.

Therapy doesn't work cuz they all think I'm crazy. ;)

Anyways, tis true I hate Cal with an irrational, seething passion. But this fact doesn't negate my point that it is near impossible to qualify the belief that Cal is more prestigious than UCLA.

So in the immortal words of Bartholomew Simpson: "Eat my shorts man!". ;)

Fair enough, if that's what you think then go ahead and keep thinking it. I don't know why you're so obsessed with prestige anyway. Its no intication of quality. I've always said that were quality is concerned, ther is no real difference between UCLA and Cal in most departments, but since you brought up prestige I thought I'd add my two cents, which is that, right or wrong, Cal is thought of as the better school.

GentlemanandScholar -

Please get a life and stop bashing UCLA. Everyone has a right to be proud of the school they attend, but people do not have the right to bash my dream school. Many people get into Berkeley and UCLA and they choose UCLA, so obviously many people dont care about your little "prestige" claim

Lord, this is worse than I thought. I say that UCLA and Cal are academic equals, and you say I'm bashing your school? It just proves how much you are obsessed with prestige. Great, choose UCLA, its an awesome school, but its not as prestigious as Cal. I'm sorry, I wish I could change that for you but I can't. You'll just have to deal with it.

I chose UCLA over Cal! Let's face it..Cal's in the ghetto and pretty cut-throat. Not that that's a horrible thing, but it's just too uptight for me. UCLA has a prime location and friendly people (people who will help without thinking "I can't let you get ahead of me!") Perfect combo of academic and social life. I'm damn proud to be a bruin!

you are bashing my school...read what you just wrote idiot
