haha yup....had a really really tough life story, but has certainly made the most of every opportunity! Goes to a very competitive HS as well, so was definitely well prepared. I'm anxious to hear the final decision!

My number 1 choice is Stanford followed by Columbia and of course the other Harvard, Yale dream schools. My SATs are in the 2000-2100 range but I have a lot going for me as far as extra curriculars and other honors/accomplishments. I would really appreciate if someone like MissyJoe or anybody else can offer me some more indepth information on how they pulled of such a successful acceptance without perfect SATs.

Riski: it really boiles down to essays...my biggest reach, UVA, I was admitted to because of ECs and essays. Heck, I even got a likely letter from them! I wrote about something completely off-the-wall, knowing it was a risk, but sometimes you have to take risks (SMART risks) to accomplish a greater goal. Of course, make sure it relates in the end! best of luck!

yorkshire: you have some great choices though! i'm sure you'll have a great time no matter where you go.

Thanks a lot for the reply. Is there anything else that you know of that might help me? Do you know of anybody that got accepted to Stanford or Columbia and how they managed to pull it off without perfect scores?
Thanks

I have a friend who was just admitted to HPS, Dartmouth, etc., with around a 1950. She took multiple AP classes, was a URM, and was involved in TONS of diversity activities, and was in leadership positions in her local ethnic organization. She won a state-wide leadership award, and didn't have the easiest life. So I guess she had a lot of the "soft" factors, but gosh, if anyone deserves it, it's her. She's a top catch for any U. And I never once heard her say she didn't think she could do it. She was modest, but incredibly optimistic. And if she can do it with her story, it's possible for anyone. I'm guessing that optimism shone through in her essays. Good luck!

Thanks a lot. If there is anything else you can tell me I would appreciate it. My life story seems a bit similar to your friends. Perhaps that will put me over the edge too. Thanks a again. Good luck in your college experience!!!

hmm, well if you would like me to read/edit your essays when you get to it, feel free to PM me! I can probably even convince her to look em over. Let me know if you need any of this sort of help!

Thanks a lot. You have been soooo helpful. If I do ever need your help is there a better way for me to reach you? Maybe via instant messaging on AIM or email?
Let me know. Thanks again.

My friend had 2200 in SAT I and 2390 in SAT II ( MATH+PHYSICS+CHEMISTRY).
He was rejected by harvard, yale, williams, amherst.
He was headboy of the school and had excellent co-curriculur. He made it to the top 17 for IPhO ( international physics olympiad ). He also had superb recommendations but was still rejected.

SO COLLEGE ADMISSION IS STILL A GAMBLE.

I shall be applying in the coming year. I will aim for MIT, Princeton, and Yale. If I don't get in them I will go to NUS in singapore ( It ranks far above HYPs in international technology ranking ) or to University of Cambridge in UK.
