The "I Got in without a 3.7+ GPA" club

Well at least I tried.

3.6/3.7 and got into uchicago and emory

that not exactly a low GPAā€¦

level 5
got into Northeastern, Clarkson, Ohio U, U of cincinatti, UMass, IUP etc etc all with scholarships except northeastern those guys dont give financial aid to us ā€˜intlā€™ students.
not bad huh?

Level 4 (3.36 non-weighted; 3.6-3.7 weighted)

Attending as class of 2013: Trinity

Accepted: Trinity College, Connecticut College, University of Ne - Lincoln
Waitlisted: Bates, Oxford College - Emory, Occidental, Carleton
Denied: none

Strangeā€¦I wasnā€™t denied to any collegesā€¦evening looking at the discrepancy of their rankingsā€¦from ranked 7 to 43ā€¦

Also, I donā€™t like what this thread portrays. It encourages mediocracy or rather letā€™s us be satisfied with it. I would just like to say that we are fortunate to be where we are and strive to do better in college. :)

I messed up my freshman year and sophomore year getting into drugs and stuff. I believe that if I would have done better those years I would be at UChicago, my dream school.

Can any of you suggest some schools for my S who is a rising senior to apply this fall. He currently has a 3.3 UW (hopefully will rise to 3.4 by end of yr.) in tough course load, and a 33 ACT, 207 PSAT.
Would he qualify for any good merit $ anywhere?

schoolmomā€¦ what does he want to study? does he like big or small? location? those are pretty solid stats

Schoolmom I had very similar stats (33 act, 3.4-3.5 uw with 9 apā€™s and some college classes). I got a half a ride from Tulane and a full ride (dorm, tuition, free macbook, $7500 stipend, priority registration, + extras) from the Macaulay Honors Programs at CUNY Hunter. I also got a GT to Cornell (my first choice) so Iā€™m going to save money my first year by going to Macaulay and then probably transfer to Cornell.

UGA with a 3.34, a school which claims GPA as the #1 criteria for admission, and waitlisted a friend of mine with a 3.5

Will that PSAT score make him a national merit finalist in his state?

Level 5 (3.7)

Got into UC San Diego, Rose-Hulman, Macalester, Bowdoin, and Williams.

I disagree. Some people try their hardest and just arenā€™t the type who will do will in school regardless. Your comment is quite uppity and pretentious.

My son is not sure what he wants to study yet but is leaning towards a Literature degree and then possibly going to grad school. He thinks he may want to be a college professor but is not sure yet. He likes med. to large schools that are in or near big citys. Regarding the national merit question, he is close to the cut off for his state last year, but I am not sure he would make finalist status with his grades. He has been diagnosed with ADD but does not receive any accomodations from his school. His grades range from A+'s to Cā€™s with most of his success being based on how the class is structured or who the teacher is rather than what he knows or doesnā€™t know.
Keep the suggestions coming. I really appreciate your help and Iā€™m sure there are other 3.3/3.4 kids out there that do as well.

miktau,
Sorry, but what is a GT to Cornell?

level 4 > unc-ch, SUNY stony brook (full ride), colorado college

^ GT means ā€œGuaranteed Transfer.ā€ Basically, they say that if you maintain a certain GPA for one year at another institution, theyā€™ll let you transfer in your second year. Lots of schools do it, and while it seems like a great deal, a good chunk of the reason they do it is because they know that most people will stay wherever they choose to go.
