The importance of General Education w/ regards to Grad School

Hi Guys! My name is Kevin and I am going into my senior year at UC Davis, I am a poli sci major. My question is I have a really good major GPA that is probably only going to improve 3.4, not a single C or anything, all B's through A's. However my general education is a different story, its a 2.something, in the late 2.0s however. Lots of C's, but also lots of A's and Bs. I definetly slept through my general education. So I was wondering will graduate schools really care about my GE? I have very high goals set for grad school, USC, UCLA, Notre Dame, Pepperdine, places like that. But I am really concerned that my GE is going to sink me. Whenever I ask somebody this question, I get responses all over the map, from they dont care to it's very important. I completed my GE at a community college so it's not on my UC transcript of which a counciler told me once that most grad schools probably won't even ask for your community college transcript since the courses are listed on the UC transcript just without grades. So I was wondering if you guys had any information. I have lots of additional things too, like I write for a magazine and have done the study abroad program a few times. But I am very worried about my utter lackluster GE performance, so does it matter?

Thanks!
Kevin

what do you plan on studying in grad school? a lot depends on which programs you are applying to

Film, Law, or Journalism. Kinda all over the map there.

It's nearly impossible to really tell you anything until you have more definite plans. To be honest, with such a distinct lack of focus, I'd be wary of really telling you to go to grad school to begin with. Film, law, and journalism are VERY different from one another.

Well I am a concrete poli sci major. I have a passion for film and I love to write, like I said I currently write for a magazine. Law would be a consideration becuase of my interest in politics. Journalism becuase I already have a job in that field and i really love it, lots of poli si majors go into journalism as well. And film which is probably my first choice, becuase i've loved it since i was a little kid and it is also my minor. So Im not really sure why you would discourage me from graduate school, of course ill have to pick one and focus on it for the application process. I was just wondering about graduate general education policies.

I'm discouraging you from grad school until you have a more concrete idea of what you want to do. Right now, what I'm getting is, "Well, I like a lot of things. I wouldn't mind being a firefighter. But wow, being an attorney might be fun. Oh, I know! I'll try out being a professional wrestler!"

Grad school is all about FOCUS. You seem to lack that. Maybe go work a couple years at that job you already have and get some. Then come back.
