Have any of you ever genuinely thought about the importance of learning? Im not talking about to get a good SAT score or to be filthy rich/famous or to get into X university. Im not trying to sound like a smartass, sounding all philosophical but I just wanted to see how many of you guys actually ever thought about this

i've recently done some thinking.. and it totally changes your views on things

That's the only thing I think about, because it's the only way I CAN learn. If I think about it in terms of xyz university, or money, or whatever, I get unmotivated. The love of learning is the only thing that inspires me to learn.

I don't see what the point is of learning and becoming highly educated to become rich. You don't need to be highly educated to be rich; look at 99% of the celebrities and athletes out there -- most of them did not graduate college. Even some business people, like Michael Dell and Richard Branson, are not highly educated. Even a brainiac like Bill Gates dropped out of college.

You learn for the joy of learning. Otherwise, go do whatever else it is you want.

Yeah i agree andre. i think the importance of learning is to discover the process of life. what's life and its meaning? who knows... the meaning of life is entirely relative to you. but back to your point andre.. i think superficial gains (wealth, fame, sat scores) of learning only makes you miss the whole point of life.

well, those are my 2 cents.. hope didn't take too long to read

ultimately, there is no importance in learning other than to do well on test scores, gpa, etc. whatever is a statistic on your application. at least from society's perspective... which ends up dominating most of your humanity anyway.

Why do I love to learn? That's a good question. I would have to say that I believe it is something hard-wired in me, something that is just the way I am that I can't explain. There are aspects of human nature which are not necessarily explainable, like why we are attracted to certain people. Why does one person tend to prefer blondes and another brunettes? There is no explanation, that is just the way they are. It is the same with learning. There is something about knowledge, acquiring it and being surrounded by it, that is wholly enriching and enjoyable, and to which I find myself irresistibly drawn to. I suppose it is a profound appreciation for the universe and for all that is true; for to have knowledge is to have an understanding of the universe and in that sense, to have an understanding of our creator, and to become closer to him.

I am honestly not a very religious person, but when I think about it, I have to conclude that it is that feeling of becoming ever closer to God, and the true nature of Nature, that captivates my mind.

"there is no importance in learning other than to do well on test scores, gpa, etc."

true coddoc.. but in the context in your quote, your "importance" is only relating to superficial benefits of education. Sure one can get good sat scores, go to a good college, land a well-paying job via learning.. but where in this process do you fully understand why you are doing this and the meaning of your life..and the whole point of life

is intelligence gained from such superficial benefits? what is intelligence? i think its the capacity to freely discover who you are and meaning of your life.

i understand your view is relating to societal perspective..but i was thinking more of your own personal view.

what worth does a personal view have in this world? you're just a single ant in an endless, huge colony.

whatever, you can have your own spiritual/religious interpretations about how sacred life is, but that is all moot in our world, where things run by money, esteem, respect, etc. and how well you can play the game and manipulate the system for your own benefit.

intelligence is when you realize how important the system is. dont get the wrong message, i hate the system. but i learned that personal values have no place in education. accept the fact that you're a robot. you dont realize it, but you're being programmed just like everyone else. why else do you think you're up this late at night waiting for your SAT score? LOL

haha i see you're quite the pessimist coddoc

im not waiting for my sat scores (well kinda am.. but not gonna stay up till 5 AM (the time it comes out here)... i have an ap bio test tommorow
