The Importance of UC to UC Reciprocity

Here's a question to anyone who's successfully gone through an intercampus transfer: how important is getting your GE's done before the spring before transfer? I am a current UC student looking to transfer to UCLA and I will definitely not have the GE's done for my campus before applying and probably not even by the spring of next year. I will have my pre requisites and two upper division classes done for my major though. Would be great if someone who got in without completing their GE's can speak now!

If your major is not competitive, I’d go for the GE’s. If you are missing one or two pre-req’s going into UCLA, you’ll be able to make up those one or two classes once attending. If you do not FINISH the GE’s, you’ll have to adhere to UCLA’s list of GE’s. Depending on how many of the GE’s you’ve taken at your current UC actually transfer, you may potentially have to do a lot of extra work. All UC classes transfer, but it’s up to UCLA whether they satisfy UCLA’s GE requirements as well (a lot won’t, especially the more unique classes). It’s okay to not have them done by fall. Try your best to finish them by spring.

Thanks for responding. I don’t necessarily have an issue finishing up my GE’s before spring but I ask because I will be abroad on EAP for the academic year next year. If I decide to stay the second semester then I will definitely not be able to finish my GE’s, but I will have some upper division work in my major completed. It looks like you made a successful transfer to ucla from UCI, do you think it’s absolutely and totally essential that I come back and complete my GE’s? Or is it not an important enough component for me to fly all the way back here? What I mean is, will I be rejected for sure despite all the progress I’ve made in my major and my gpa because I don’t have UC GE reciprocity done?

EDIT: I asked UCLA about this before and they said:

"As a UC transfer you will be exempt from the two English class requirements. *You will need to focus on the major prep.

No, you do not need to finish GEs at UCSB to be eligible for Transfer Admission."

But on their website it says that UC transfers should focus on completing their campus’ General Education requirements.

What do you guys think?

Wait, so will not completing GEs definitely hurt your chances of getting in? I’m applying as a Physics major to UC Davis (the major isn’t impacted at all), and there’s no way I can complete my GEs at UC Santa Cruz because I’m transferring in one year (as a junior transfer of course). So will not having UC-UC Reciprocity hurt me in this situation? Thanks!

UC Reciprocity is not considered for admission (officially, but there’s no saying what their actual evaluation process is like). It should not hurt your chances of getting in. However, once you’re actually at UCLA, you might end up having to do a lot of GE’s because many of the ones you’ve taken at your original campus will not satisfy UCLA’s requirements. There’s also no guarantee that your upper division classes will satisfy UCLA’s upper division requirements (unless you’ve found the actual articulation equivalency sheet and it says so…not sure if your major has one). If you finish your GE’s before transferring, you don’t have to worry about any of that.
