The importance of undergrad business

How important is it to have some sort of Business degree and will that importance vary from the type of school you are from?

Currently, I feel somewhat split about studying business. I feel that I don't necessary need to study business now since I want to graduate school for a MBA.

I've also seen and heard of students from top schools studying non-business related subjects and still being able to work for Financial firms and other business related job.

A part of me feels that it would be repetitive to go to undergrad business school and then get an MBA.

Does anyone else have a different opinion?

IMO, so much of business is learned on the job and not a classroom.

Much of what is covered in a MBA program I would assume is covered in a business undergrad program (statistics, economics, etc.). Still, an MBA will focus more on management of a business more so than the business itself.

Wtih that in mind, a lot of people who do not have undergrad business degrees pursue an MBA because they want to learn to manage the business they have become a part of. A lot of poeple end up where you least expect them, based on their degree. This can be due to luck, odd career paths, detering interests, or any number of things. I wouldn't judge a book by it's degree, mainly because of the first sentence in this post.

If you like business then study business, do good, get a good job, and then get your MBA. What type of business will you end up managing with this education? I don't know either. However, you majored in another degree, odds are better for you that you'll be managing a type of business related to that degree. International Relations or Business will probably get you something with a lot of travel, Economics will probably get you into an acounting firm or fund management, Engineering can land you a number of places, etc. I know a guy with a health degree who is manager at Cintas selling paper shredding services.

I don't think it will be all too repetitive.

So I am guessing that the besy way to suit a different interest of study would be for me to Minor is something else while staying in my business program?

You could, though I don't personally feel that a minor isn't worth anything.

If you are interested in a different field as well as business I would try to find a major that would combine the two over taking business + minor or just do the other major with the intention of getting an MBA, and get a business oriented job right out of college.

What are you looking at doing?

Well I have an interest in computers, but I have little intention in working as a programmer--it's more of a personal interest.

For business, I would like to do consulting and/or run/own a computer oriented business.

I would look at those larger companies that you would like to work for and see what they tend to favor. Certain types of consulting hire from different walks of life. Business might not be a bad major.
