The Incredibles

My school claims to be "Overachiever" type place...too bad we don't learn 1/5 of regents curriculum...and we've only read one book in english...pretty sad. I wish I went somewhere that didn't completely suck

Are you guys in Algebra II? I was pretty amazed when I realized that my textbook - which has only ten substantial Algebra II chapters - spends an entire half of chapter reviewing the basics of adding and subtracting fractions.

Our teacher is angry at... a lot of things. But yea, he's the one. Still, there are going to be 2 pre-calc classes next semester and I'm guessing that at least half the people there will be trying to double up on calc as well. Therefore, we'll at least have one class right?

Well if you self study, and you take the AP exam, and you ace that... obviously if the school says you have to take pre-calc next year just show them your Calc BC exam score. If you get a 4 or 5 just ask the principal for dual enrollment.

Kaatu Bara Nikto: Yep. we're both in Alg 2 right now... I keep getting caught playing on my calculator instead of paying attention.

Haha. I think it would suck to be stuck in a classroom five hours a week for a year doing Algebra II...I'm doing it in about four months, doing only two or three hours a week.

Oh its a lot more than 5 hours. Can you feel my pain? He won't even allow us to do homework in class even if I know the material.

That's just terrible. Such a waste of time, and energy. And not even allowing you to do the homework once you know it!

What do you do in class the whole time - review basic math?

^^This is why you should sit in the back of the class.

Didnotfaillife - Our teacher is good. But I'm not learning anything. I've wasted five months. It's a huge waste of time. Given the chance, I would've finished Algebra II in 2 or 3 weeks. Five months is just crazy.

Hah, I do... but somehow he still manages to catch me o__0 Is it a freaky teacher sense or something?

"Oh look the little Asian girl isn't paying attention like all the other Asians!"

Ah, I just stick out I guess...

Chaos: Hey, just self study that calc book and take the exam. Then sign up for dual enrollment. The graduation requires... what? 3 years of math? Just get those years at a college instead of high school. Yes, I know that our teacher is the best out of the bunch but sometimes he just goes over the basics like crazy.

[rant=on]
Keep in mind that he has to teach the whole class, so it's not his option if he wants to go over the basics or not.

What's dual enrollment? Do you think I could tell them I self-studied and go to the proper course?

I had a personal talk with the principal about distance learning and going to another school and whatnot. He said I was taking it too fast and I should focus on getting an A in my current math class. Well, I have pretty close to a 100, so I say "What now?" :D
I don't understand why they underestimate us.

When I told our teacher I was studying Calculus, he said I was full of crap. Now, he meant that as a joke, but that's usually the response I get. He knows I don't pay attention in class because he himself said "I know this class is boring you, but I think they'll make you take Calculus even if you passed the AP test beforehand." when I was talking with him.

[\rant] :p

Haha, yea our teacher isnt the most optimistic of people. He does help you with advanced topics if you ask though. I brought in some homework from my other class and he helped me even though he wasn't teaching it. But they do underestimate us too much. When I first asked the counselor about taken the AP exam, she told me that they weren't going to offer it, but I persisted and got them to talk to other schools for me.

And I know for a fact that they won't make you take calc if you pass the exam. That is bull. The exam basically tests what you learn in calc. What's the point of doing it again if you already know everything? I asked the counselor about taking AP comp sci after I pass the exam and she told me that she would highly discourage it because it wouldn't show anything to colleges.

Dual enrollment is when you take a college course for high school credits. Like go to the community college and such I suppose. I brought it up once and they told me to ask the principal. I doubt the principal will let you do that unless you already pass that AP exam, so if I were you and I knew that I could ace the exam, I would take it this March.

Now given that you're only in Alg 2 right now, I think that the counselors will advise against taking the exam and might not even help you. If that's the case you can just go on college board's site and call the schools yourself. But if you're going to do this, make sure that you know the material. It would suck if you got a 1 on the exam.

Dual enrollment is taking classes at a community college or university.

Sometimes teachers don't know the policies. Actually, a lot of the time they don't.

You've got it must easier because you are a sophomore, life. I'm a freshman, so the counselors and principal just think I'm crazy. -_-

I know I can ace the BC exam. If I get accepted into a boarding school (Exeter :)), they'll probably understand the situation. I'm not relying on our school to do too much for me.

A lot of these kids probably have never even experience the fun of friends and the outside life of a book. Learning is great...to a POINT. After that you have to remember, you die, and that is the end of you for good. This is why I think we really also have to value our lives and spend times with others. Going to an amusement park and riding a roller coaster is more fun than studying the physics behind it(trust me). I think a lot of these kids miss on this in life. Just my opinion though. Maybe their true happiness is a textbook.

Haha, I remember when I was a freshman trying to do get the attention of the counselors and such... it didn't work well. And I'm pretty surprised that they're even paying attention to me now. I guess it's do to our lack of upperclassmen. But it could also be due to the fact that I'm only doing comp sci which is considered an elective and therefore not really that hard, as opposed to math which takes freaky genius people like you to do.

"If you are a homeschooled student or attend a school that does not offer AP, you can still take the exams by arranging to test at a participating school."

Heh, you don't even have to TALK to our school about it since we don't offer AP. Just go behind their back and do it XD

Nam3less: I hang out with the druggies and the pot heads -__-... yes, they're fun because of the conversation, but when I get home, I like to do something productive. (Makes up for school I suppose)

Indeed. I'm just going to take the test in March.

Everyone take a look at this site - free AP Exam preparation:

Hope it helps!

Post-AP! I thought AP was the end-all, there can't be anything after it!

Me too. Now I feel hopelessly inadequate. But at least I don't have to worry about uber-competitive peers stealing my thunder. I have no uber-competitive peers. I own the thunder :)

^We have a girl like you in my grade. Even the asian kids can't come close to her lol. She was so sad for getting a 95 in APUSH. I wanted to say "ST.FU". One day I want to have the highest grade in APUSH. Then I could go up to her and say "What now?" :D

My school doesn't even have AP Calc BC yet and we are one of the top schools in Florida. Granted, my school is only a few years old :D and most of our seniors are taking pre-calc XD .

I'm a sophomore taking precalc, and I plan to take AP Calc AB junior year, but what will I take senior year? There is no way my school will offer post-AP classes.

Why don't you just study it on your own?

Don't rely on the school you go to cater to your needs all the time. Ask your counselor about options. Teach yourself.
