@ProGenius it’s hard to predict chances because no one knows what goes inside the admission committees’s mind.
your sat subject test results are good but honestly your chances are severed by your very low SAT scores. (according to me) all top leagues certainly look at Reading sub score and Maths. To be honest, there can’t be an excuse when you are such a brilliant candidate applying to top leagues. You should have made your schedule so that u could apply to new sat for 2 times incase something goes wrong
@ProGenius also olympiads will help a LOT! Best of luck.
a fair warning to every candidate: dont accept Pre-Engineering offer from UW-Seattle if u dont get your intended major of choice. Pre-Eng is just a shit thing that does not guarantee at all that you will get your desired engineering course in Uw-Seattle after one year. You have to re-apply. This totally sucks.
@slightlymad Have you applied to UWash Seattle?
I heard from somewhere that they admit about 200 students for CSE. Any idea how true is that ?
The source also suggested that 29% is the acceptance rate for international students applying to CSE.
My SAT Score is a mere 1370.
Plus, my Personal Essay is not at all related to my major.( I thought that like most colleges, your Personal Essay doesn’t have to do anything with your intended major. Courtesy Common App). UWash’s CSE website mentions that they closely look at your Personal Essay.
( Your infatuation with CSE, why you chose this major? etc.)
Also, they do not allow you to make edits to your application.
One thing is for sure, I will proceed with UWash Seattle, if and only if I get a direct admit to CSE Department,
@slightlymad What chance do I have of getting into UWash’s CSE Department?
@piku1998 nah i did’nt. because of the fact. be-sure when you hear about your acceptance (if u are admitted) that u are not offered some pre-science or pre-engineering crap.
Thanks @slightlymad this was really helpful.
BTW who told you?
@piku1998 most likely that is either wrong data or wrongly interpreted one. UW admits strong students to its Engineering Courses just like any other well known university. I can’t say about your chances because we never really know what goes inside the head of admission committee. Dont keep your hopes high. GA Tech has recently outright rejected many superb candidate with 34/36s and 2220. it’s all tough when alone some 20000 candidates each year score 1500 and above in SAT
@piku1998 who told me what
I contacted their admissions department, and they told me that they don’t consider SAT Score as an essential part of your application( BTW submitting SAT Score is optional for UWash). They look closely at your academic scores,
But that may be only for the admission part.( not direct admission)
I know. I have been rejected from GaTech. This time the competition was insanely fierce and competitive.
About the pre-engineering thing
their site. check google on pre-engineering at UW. last time some of my frnds were really excited with their acceptances only to realize the game http://www.engr.washington.edu/current/admissions/preengr
@piku1998 sure UW and even NYU don’t require SAT. They are optional. Yeah this is a fair way to mint money. That is it. You have to be a rare gem to get into CS in UW without submitting an SAT or without having a good one.when tons of applicants who are bright and submit their scores, competing for the same place, the university has to do some shortlist in some way. In other words, it is you who has to decide whether your efforts and eca’s are better at such an edge where even SAT doesn’t matter.
Are you guys Indian or Indian American? If the latter then SAT and ACT scores are required and are essential. Also not much focus is given to the scores of Indian curriculum except for the courses we take as there is rampant grade deflation and inflation in schools in India. At the most they can assert something from your 10th board scores as those examinations are equal for everyone( for example UIUC only asked for 10th board marks).
Now, here comes the fact that how popular and rigorous is your school.
As far as class X is concerned, 2nd language( Hindi, German, French, Sanskrit, Japanese, Russian etc) may be different for different students.
@slightlymad , here is another link with helpful information about admission to the various engineering majors at Washington:
http://www.engr.washington.edu/current/admissions/admitstats
A small percentage of top applicants (almost exclusively from the State of Washington) are offered direct admission to an engineering major as incoming freshmen. All other students enroll in the College of Engineering with “pre-engineering” status. Your prospects of admission to your major through regular admission after completing your prerequisites are a function of where you stand academically in relation your fellow freshmen and your work ethic.
Here are the stats of last year’s enrolled freshmen in engineering and pre-engineering, according to the ASEE profile:
SAT 75th 25th
Math Range: 740 620
Reading Range: 680 550
ACT 75th 25th
Math Range: 34 28
Composite Range: 33 27
Good luck with all of your applications.
@UWfromCA you are absolutely right. A lot of indians have misconception about the pre-engineering. It’s not a guarantee that u will be admitted into the major of your choice. So for us Indians, attending a foreign institution for a Pre-Engineering is worthless.
Arghhhhh…is anyone else going nuts waiting on the decisions to start rolling in?
I don’t think I’ll be able to survive the next two and a half months with what my boards going on and the decisions (read: rejections) coming in…
I was accepted to Fordham($50000 scholarship) and Millsaps College(Presidential Scholarship of $32000 yearly) in EA.
@SetuShah10 totally agree with you on this one. I am also restless as hell.
