The Indian Thread #19

^rsaksena- I’ve been thinking about your case. I think it definitely becomes a different case altogether, pretty much similar to Nomad’s case. Since you spend 12 hrs in the institute, that really doesn’t give you much time for EC’s and that is fact that absolutely must be highlighted in your application. I don’t know about the reach schools like MIT, Stanford(where it probably won’t help you at all- This is just my theory since they already have too many qualified applicants to fill up the space) but could very well be an important factor in other less of a ‘reach’ kind schools.

^thanks for “thinking about my case” in the first place pixie.

Are you saying I should write about it in the Additional Info section, or that I should have my counselor mention it in his rec???

@compscifan: Computer Science.

My common app essay was 820 words long.

820??? Is’nt that pushing it a little aniruddhc??

Of course!! You mean you haven’t done that already? Your counsellor/princy should definitely be talking about that; in fact, that is the one thing she/he should focus upon in the letter.

I haven’t done what?? Writing about it in the Additional Info section?? No I haven’t actually. I fear that if I mention it, it will end up sounding as though I’m giving excuses.

Yes my principal is going to write about it in detail; or rather I have to draft it - he does’nt know much English.

^ Yeah, that sounds good enough.

^hmm btw did you attach a resume for your Yale app??

Do any universities require a peer/friend evaluation?

I’ve read that some do… So yeah temme guys!

^ as far as I know Dartmouth does…

My dad’s office got gutted in a fire.

His cabin and the attached garden, all gone.

My dad’s office got gutted in a fire.

His cabin and the attached garden, all gone.

Your Dad alright na???
I hope he is.

@ani: That’s bad. Cause pata chala?

Neway …
Can’t ask my principal to sign on that draft which explains the sitituatio that rsaxena finds himself in …
He will not SIGN on or even look at at anything that has a ‘IIT preparation’ kind of thing on it.
God, he’s so anti-coaching anti-IIT. Our teachers gave us enough hell for attending such classes. Princi will simply not sign on it.

In my school any activity ( sport tournaments or other cultural activities ) are NOT ALLOWED for class 12th students, though the student may participate in any outside the school ( debates or tournaments, but not the school ones). Then how do I convey it to the adcoms, hm?

I guess, I’ll have to write it on the additional information section of the application.
Any problems if I mention it there?

^No problems there. I think that is the exact purpose of the section.

Only Dartmouth right? Okay…

Thankfully, my dad is alright! He was unwell yesterday and today so he didn’t go to office :D

Google “HDIL building fire”

Here’s a pic of the incident:

I’m sorry to hear that, Ani.

So an illness saved your dad!! That’s fate I suppose; how twisted is life!!

@compscifan

Actually there is. If your principal doesn’t sign it, then what you write will not be backed by your counselor’s recommendation. So very obviously it’s gonna look like you’re making excuses.

If your principal definitely won’t sign, then send your recommendation letters online. You only need a digital signature i.e. typed name so you can do it yourself. Otherwise, don’t mention the IIT thing at all.

I don’t think there’s any remote benefit in mentioning it unless you’re stuck in 12 hr classes every day like rsaksena or nomad. Normal after school/weekend coaching is absolutely no big deal.

Aniruddh- I am sad to hear that. I hope the cause is found out soon. That was lucky indeed, that he didn’t go today.

PS- I didn’t post this before my above post because this way I dedicate my 900th post to your dad’s office!
