Anyone here applying to rice ( engg. ).
How waz the interview ?

Rice is an interesting place. It is very similar to WUStL w.r.t. admissions. If you show a lot of love then you have a very good chance assuming you have good #s. Nothing special about Rice interviews. Varies with the interviewer.

Because all your apps are done.

Guys do you know about the acceptances and financial aid of Occidental College? I didn’t see any acceptances last year. I’m planning to ED II Oxy and was wondering if you guys know about the financial aid awarded to internationals.

^I have no idea, sorry.

One of my friends (she’s Mexican) took a Gap Year. I spoke to her last night, and she told me how she’s spent the last few months doing a course in Italy and learning Italian and how she’ll spend the next four months doing the same in Spain. o_o
I want to take a Gap Year and do that now. Seems so interesting!

PD- Wow. You seem to have had a great year. Why did you decide to take one though? I’m curious. (I don’t mean to be intrusive. You don’t have to answer that if you’d rather not.)

Itsmylife- We shall call you nick. Short for nickname. Which is something we decided you need. Hahaha. I know, i know, it’s terribly unimaginative. But well, Christmas is coming so why not? What better name around Christmas time?

I finished my Harvard supplement! Finallyyy. Done with Swarthmore too. Princeton’s up next! When are you all planning to submit your apps? I’m aiming for Dec 15th max. (That’s not gonna work out but still.) Also, does anyone know of ANY humanities kids accepted to Pton? Everyone I know/have heard of had science. Not even Commerce. My counselor says they’re VERY science biased. Which is understandable, since the science culture is so strong there, but they have to have some humanities kids still no? Ahh I shouldn’t be at all hopeful. I doubt Princeton will change it’s acceptance pattern to accept me.

Are there any Indian eateries near Williams?
Williamstown is pretty isolated, but I’m still clinging onto the small hope…

@Kaira- All the P’ton acceptees I know were sciencies, eeps!

pixie, hope this helps.

Tippu, that looks great! Thanks.

Tippu is rice better than georgia tech? :|

^Course not.

Kaira - Okay. I hereby accept Nick as my official CC nickname. :>
Harvard’s got one of the easiest supplements. Did you write the optional essay/research work? I’m assuming you’re done with your commonapp essay?

Rice better than g’tech? in what sense? I guess in terms of engg coursework, g’tech is a far more accomplished college. Holistically speaking, Rice is better. In the same way, Purdue is ‘better’ than Rice for engineering.

She meant that Georgia Tech is better than Rice.

GT and Purdue are really not in the same category lol. One is a top 30 school and the other is a top 90 school. I’d put GT, UIUC and UMich in the same category.

I know. I was referring to your question.

Lol, is it so? I’m sorry. My friend in Purdue tells me that UIUC is a carbon copy of Purdue. In terms of course rigor, campus location, employment opportunities, and acceptance rate.

Lol seriously?

I’m so not considering uiuc then.

You know a jns ib topper chose to go to UIUC instead of Stanford for psych last year… So I thought that uiuc is a really good university.

Besides, I don’t really care about overall rankings because my objective is to go there and do a comp science/engg degree. I don’t really care if X university is ranked higher than Y Institute of Tech just because it has a better psych, law, cognitive science etc dept. Doesn’t really matter cuz I’m not going there to do those courses so yeah :P

My sister and bro-in-law’s opinions matter a lot since they’re pretty much in the same field that I’m gonna go in so they know which univs are respected etc and which aren’t since they do recruiting as well…

Btw, Purdue is really crappy according to them and uiuc gets really good recruitments since most companies come to uiuc and a few others like northwestern and georgia tech directly after recruiting from mit and stanford because the talent pool is usually equally good in the top 25% of students so they get almost equal salaries and stuff.

Hence, don’t base your college selection on rankings alone they’re pretty useless. Why in the world is Vanderbilt University ranked higher than Michigan? Why isn’t Michigan in the Top 15? WHY? Its good for engineering, business and medicine. Stupid, stupid rankings.

Oh and never ask freshmen for their opinions about their college. Always ask jrs and seniors since they usually know a lottttt more about the university/recruitment scene than naaive freshmen.

Sorry for the rant.

From the little I know about both of them, I agree with itsmylife99. Purdue and UIUC are almost the same, especially if you’re into engineering. One of my friends graduated from Purdue last year, and according to him Purdue was way better than UIUC in terms of job prospects and university reputation, though the core curriculum was identical. Yeah, a little skewed opinion maybe, but I wouldn’t write of any of those two universities if I were you. You might wanna check this out:
<a href=“Best Colleges & Universities - Ranked by Job Recruiters - WSJ”>Best Colleges & Universities - Ranked by Job Recruiters - WSJ;
They’re more or less even stevens with the recruiters as well.

Oh and Cornell shares its rank with Purdue according to US News and both are ranked lower than UIUC. So much for rankings.

PS: Cornell FTW!

Rankings cannot be trusted.

[QS World University Rankings 2010 - Engineering & Technology | Top Universities](http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2010/subject-rankings/technology)

Cornell is 19th here.

^ There you have it.
I’d say if you’re applying to one, apply to both. Though they have a different vibe to them and weathers as despicable at each of them, but I’m of the opinion that they have very little between them as both have pretty respectable Engineering departments.

Oh and FYI, almost everyone from my high school got into either of the two.

Kaira-Princeton does offer majors in Arts & Humanities, so I think you should still apply. I think you stand out by majoring in Humanities in a pool of Indians applying for Science, esp since people have a stereotype of all Indians wanting to do Science or Math. Sad but true (Sad that people have stereotypes, not about Indians doing Math or Science).
That said, my uncle did Chem at Princeton, and everyone I know who’s applying to P’Ton wants to major in Science :S That, along with the fact that Princeton doesn’t offer Double Majors, is why I’m not applying there.
Oh and good job getting your Harvard supplement done!

^ I think Princeton’s certificate program somewhat makes up for that.
