@ pixie - if you don’t mind me asking what was his sat score?

@debarghya9 … Yale alumni in Chandernagore? nope… none that i know of… if anyone from here ever went to Yale, they sure as hell didn’t come back… :|

my interview was on Skype… my interviewer was actually from Mumbai…

and good sign? how so?

Does anyone know how seriously adcoms take 11th scores?

It seems every year I go up and down the scale. In 9th my percentage was 81%. In 10th it was 92%. And now in 11th I screwed the full year because of “IIT coaching” and skimping out on school and I’m sure that I won’t be able make up for it in time to score above 80%. If I do spectacularly in 12th, can I redeem myself in the adcoms’ eyes?

^
Yeah as long as you don’t get 50’s and 60’s.

@Sam: Well, the fact that you got your interview in January somewhat offsets the point that I’m trying to make but Yale does not interview the vast majority of Indian applicants from what I know. I haven’t been offered one and Calcutta’s supposed to be less remote, right? :P

Did you submit your app very early?

umm your grade 11 scores are by far the most important ones on your profile.
So you have to pull them up.

I am sure everyone here will back me up

^ True.

Funny how each and every indian applicant screws up the 11th grade (%age and attendance) due too IIT coaching.

A bad 11th grade just makes you like every other applicant (academically, of course). This is NOT something that is looked down upon. A good 11th grade score would, however, make you stand out.

As once someone here (I think harisheena) said - We tend to have the ‘W’ graph, with each joint representing a different grade. Low in 9th, high in 10th then again low in 11th and high in 12th.

You’re fine mate. Just don’t screw up 12th now.

yale interviews almost every single dps rkpite who applies, so yeah. An interview in Jan is not an indication of anything. Feeder schools actually have special interviewers assigned for their kids but for the rest, interviews for Yale are handed out on a first come first serve basis.
Guess i couldn’t keep myself out of here eh. Oh well, only english next, so relatively free.

That makes it an “N” graph. But oh well, Harisheena said that, and we all know how smart he is.

Whomever you are mentioning here is right. It is W and not N because N indicates gradual fall but steep rise (which is not the case), whereas W is gradual increase and gradual decrease.

Moreover, fall is a relative term. When you mention your grades fell, it means they were higher before. In the W case, the starting point = grade 8 and N makes no sense here.

Hope that helps!

.10…12
N
9…11

.8…10…12
W
.9…11

10 characters

LOL. To prove anir…'s point you have to slant N. haha.

BTW nice graphics. :)

Grade-deflation varies wildly across schools.

Haha, thanks for the reassurance mate. Now that I’ve quit IIT coaching for good I can finally focus on my academics, as well as some other things I haven’t had the time to address.

Harisheena, oops sorry DreamsUnlimited, I didn’t take the 8th grade into consideration. Both are correct.

Btw when I saw “N” and “W” I thought you got into Northwestern :S

And Debarghya, will reply to your PM in a bit :|

ani, you’re such a clever darling! but I’d thought that the plan was to let the, uh, ‘person’ continue being under the impression that he’d taken us all in. :P

btw, no point in keeping it in really so here goes, i was the one who got a call for harvard interview, not my friend. I dunno if he even applied although he probably did. My interviewer called on tuesday. I wasn’t expecting this at all and it just came out of the blue; I just feel honoured that Harvard is considering me to this stage!
Thank you to everyone who ‘accidently’ congratulated me! :)

Hope boards are going well for everyone, it’s bye bye chem for me and I couldn’t be happier. Gl to everyone in cbse who has English tomorrow. Bye!

^ Awesome!
…

thank you compscifan, tippu!

I’m not really able to believe the implication, and it might just turn out to be nothing. In any event, I’m overwhelmed that they’d consider me on the shortlist. Coming on here would make anyone nervous so it’s bye bye cc again till exams, although I might pop in and let you all know how it goes. :)

^ Best wishes.
