Haven’t been on CC for the longest time…just wanted to congratulate everyone for their college acceptances :slight_smile:

Class of 2016 FTW!

Congrats to all those who got accepted to Class of 2016. I wud go UCSD just for the weather!

I can’t justify paying the OOS tuition for UCSD, or even UCLA.

@Pratyush: Congratulations :D

@Tryingforcollege: I’m sure your experience will come very handy to all of us in the coming days :D

@Brownie: Now you know Anialways as the most helpful person here :wink: Btw, congratulations :D

@Contradict: Welcome back! Heard from any colleges?

@Pluto: Why just the weather? The campus is on a BEACH. It also has a nudist beach close by … but that’s just too much information from my economics teacher (Berkeley Alum).

@Ascaris: If I remember correctly, you are a US citizen? Which state? Anyway, why is OOS tuition for UCLA not justified? It is still significantly less than any other top private institution. UCLA is a university of very good calibre.

I am not a US citizen. I’m an Indian citizen living in the middle east. Of course UCLA is a good deal when you compare it with privates but when there are state universities like UIUC or GATech which are significantly cheaper and yet on par, or even better, than UCLA in my field then paying a premium for the weather and the high cost of living in Los Angeles makes little sense.

@ascaris - I don’t see much difference in costs of UIUC and UCLA
[Fees, Tuition, and Estimated Student Budget - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/budget.htm)
[U</a> of I Admissions: Tuition & Fees](Page Not Found, Illinois Undergraduate Admissions)
Georgia tech is considerably cheaper [Georgia Institute of Technology :: Financial Aid :: Cost of Attendance](<a href=“Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Financial Aid”>Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Financial Aid)

While UCLA may have a more diverse non-engineering curriculum (perhaps more opportunities for double major), cost is a significant factor for OOS students. One thing you may want to find is the scope of summer internship opportunities or other on-campus jobs. That may offset the high costs.

is it me, or was this thread REALLY dead for almost a day and a half now?!

UIUC owns UCLA in CS.

I have no significant contribution to make to the conversation, except this-
@Rev-it surprised me too! :P

Oh, and, Wellesley decisions out today! :(

I came across this post regarding ‘stuck-up’ students a Cal - or for that matter, any university. It holds true for some part:

I’d have thought the higher achieving students would be more stuck up because they’d consider themselves too good for Berkeley.

hey guys? quick question?
why is that none of you applied at John hopkins? its the best school for pre-med and engineering courses etc!? anything we 17’er should worry about it- like any drawback or something?
my first choice is JHU above HYP. wonder why not many indians apply there! :</p>

Johns Hopkins is better for pre-med and med school than engineering, where it is outclassed by a large number of private (MIT, Stanford, CMU, Cornell) and public (UIUC, UMich, GATech, Purdue) universities that most Indians apply to. In my experience at least, prospective doctors don’t want to do undergrad in the US because they’d rather not splurge 200k to waste four years doing pre-med when they can directly get an MBBS from one of the many fine medical colleges in India.

ah, i know about doing medicine from US. they give NO-NON-NADA financial aid to internationals for the med-school :\ they dont give any aid to their nationals also. doing med-course from a grad-school is like super-duper-wooper expensive, unless your sir-name is mallaya (well, he’s drowning anyway) or ambani…
btw, does JHU give enough aid to international students?
(curious bcz my intended major is bio-med engineering!)

Agreed with Ascaris. That being said, JHU is a good university. One of my seniors, class of 2009 was accepted to JHU for Physics Honors. He decided not to go due to less financial aid (think: recession/credit crunch)

I didn’t apply to JHU because I simply didn’t want to.

Haha is it still true that the Indian MBBS isn’t recognized by grad schools in the US? Last I remember, they had to take placement tests to prove their proficiency :mad:

JHU is great place, not just for med, but also international relations. Perhaps it wouldn’t be wrong to say that its the best place for IR. Its grad school for IR, Paul Nitze School for Advanced International Studies is one of the most well renowned schools…
