The Indian Thread #20 (a)

Okay okay guys, I’m sure it was an honest mistake. Let’s move on :)

I apologize for making the claim that it was public, as I was misinformed.
But to be honest, I still feel the larger point in my earlier post holds considerable weight, backed up by Government funded higher education powerhouses such as the ones mentioned.
I hope that one specific dismissal of instance doesn’t draw the spotlight away from the basic argument my previous post intended to emphasize.

No I also believe the basic argument is pretty true. And its actually a very commendable job on the government’s part to maintain such universities with excellent facilities and faculty.

We criticize the Indian government for everything that it does wrong, but I think it is really important to praise what it does right. Maintaining institutions like IIT’s, IIM’s and nearly all the best medical colleges, AIIMS, KGMC, AFMC… is an amazing achievement.

And as far as US public universities are concerned, some of them are spectacular. Though they do get a lot of private funding… like University of Michigan (I’m attending!! ) endowment is around $8 billion, out of which only 350 million is paid for by the government, they accept 65% of the students from Michigan, therefore have a smaller pool to accept from (might not be less qualified, but under one line of argument might not be the best set of people they could get either) and yet manage to maintain a standard comparable to the major public universities, including most Ivy’s.

Besides, the feel of attending a public university is just completely different. The size can be overwhelming but I think it also teaches you a lot…

Go Blue!!

I haven’t looked up exact #s but I think $8 billion is like total money in the bank (or investments) and $350 million is what they get every year from the Federal govt for research. At public universities most of the money for teaching and tuition subsidies for in-state students comes from the state budget.

At private universities most of the funding for research comes from Federal agencies such as NIH, DARPA, NASA *etc. It will be interesting to find out how the new [budget will affect what goes on at JPL and in turn at Caltech.

Talking about endowment, our beloved universities make *vice](NASA Budget Unveiled, Serious Implications for JPL and Caltech – Pasadena Now) investments to educate us. Topic for another day.

Go Buckeyes! :)

Umm… endowment kind of means total money in the bank… they use its interest for running the university and providing aid. While it is correct that $350 million is what they get from the state every year, the endowments interest gets them way more… like atleast $640 million, assuming that they get 8% interest, which is the minimum interest that they would get for a deposit of that magnitude.

Considering that 65% of the population is in state I would assume that some amount from the endowment also goes towards subsidizing the in-state tuition…

It might be true for most publics that in state tuition subsidy is dependent upon the state funding, but for Michigan, their other sources of funding are increasing a lot faster, while state funding is mostly constant. I think this is definitely a step in the right direction, and UMich not depending on state funding is a huge factor contributing to its quality, which arguably translates to an excellent ranking too.

PS: I’m think I’m going to wait until I actually get to UMich before advancing the rivalry!!

You can get details on University of Michigan funding at:*[University of Michigan Funding: A Snapshot](<a href=“General Fund Budget Snapshot | U-M Public Affairs”>http://vpcomm.umich.edu/budget/fundingsnapshot/index.html)

According to the information presented above, U-M ranks 112th in endowment per student. This is not something to brag about.

Here are some interesting tid-bits about [UM endowment investments and returns](http://www.bf.umich.edu/docs/10endowmentprofile.pdf).

btw, you should be shouting “Go Wolverines!”. Anyway, you will learn to hate THE Ohio State Buckeyes.

PS: I have no idea why I am digging into U-M funding.

I think the terminology “public school” on the subcontinent comes to us from private schools that are in the hands of the public as opposed to the crown/government, from the British.

@fall2016- Yes, I’m going to Stanford (while Brown, Dartmouth, and Berkeley were good alternatives, I’m a sunny weather type of guy). But I’m deferring enrollment and taking a gap year. So I guess I’m part of the class of 2017.

fall2016parent, im most probably headed for the university of chicago. what about your kid?

nonsecure, So you are not accepting your place at Stanford?? How could a 17’er even compete with your stats…

Mrinal

nocensure has already secured his place there. He is allowed to defer his enrolment, which he is doing. So you are not competing with him for Class of 2017 admissions. However, that is not to say, there is going to be dearth of competition for your batch.

@fall2016parent- Yep I will be heading to UMass, unless I can get off the waitlist at BU…

Thanks anialways for clearing that up
Yes, I always think that the admissions are getting tougher by the year, and I think we are going to see a lot of 17’ers here by June. ;)
