The Indian Thread #20 (a)

@anial- Bingo.

@mrinal- Even if I was competing you would stand a very good chance on your own. So don’t sweat it.:)

@nocensure: Why a gap year?
@2016parent: Not yet decided! Still thinking between H and P! Difficult decision!

p25, what is your intended major?

Bioscience/Bioengineering

Where are you heading? CMU or Berkeley?

I’m still undecided, leaning towards CMU though.

Dunno much about Bioengineering/science, so can’t comment on that. But I’d imagine that Stanford has a better program in it than H and P?

Stanford is excellent but so are H and P. and they are offering great FA where as Stanford does not! H has Brand name where as P has better program in both Bioscience and Bioeng(as minor or certificate program!) Princeton is probably better for UG! and Harvard for Grad Study!
But I am still thinking!

I would suggest you to go to Princeton, but one can’t really say when the other choice is Harvard :wink: , I would say that you should visit the campuses to decide.

P25
Princeton started Biological Engineering couple of years ago to compete with others and until then they were issuing an engineering biology certificate. However, the program is part of Chemical engineering and it is packed with what used to chemE courses. Harvard has had its program for three years and it is an independent department.

Ahhh FA. Anyways, you won’t go wrong at either :)

p25 - my vote would lean slightly towards princeton. H overwhelms me…P is situated in beautiful princeton NJ. But both have their “elitist” students. I think P has more grade deflation, but P has better undergrad. You should post another of those P vs H thread in the respective college board. Again, it is your personality…think what makes you happy. Princeton weather is also slightly better than boston.

Take Princeton man!! P has an equal brand name with those whose opinions matter for grad schools!

A quick question here guys, Just say that I play Table Tennis at the state level, and I fill it as an EC. So, AFAIK colleges ask whether I want to pursue my ECs in college, So do I fill Yes even though colleges don’t recruit for table tennis??

@Mrinal2207 : I would definately fill. For majority of the good colleges a “Well rounded” candidate means interests in art, sport, social service along with studies / grades. For all “top colleges” the depth and spread of ones involvement is also extremely important.

Thanks dingly, Yes, you are right. It can’t hurt to fill up the box. :)

Updated list -

HCaulfield - Berkeley/Princeton (WL) ?

No, my D is still 2 years away. …I am only here based on my own experience as a graduate student many years back…:)

Mrinal - Isn’t it too early for college apps?

F16P, was just wondering :wink: Don’t want to be confused about the whole process till the last minute. Anyway, I think I have got all my questions answered here, from how to apply (:eek: ) to chances, people here at CC are great :)

@Mrinal - The only thing I would comment on TT is it is just getting so common with all Indian applicants (every indian acceptance thread has “played TT”). I understand that is one of the most popular sports in India. So yes, it doesn’t matter whether you say you will play or not play…if I am HYPMS…the only way that would make a difference is if you were literally part of the indian national team. But again, yes, if that is your other EC, it helps to show you are well rounded but it just isn’t a hook as such.

@fall2016parent: Thanks for adding my"D" in the list She sent her confirmation to WPI
BTW do we have to reply to those she is not going to join and got admission letters??

@ F16P: Thanks. I know that it is not a hook, I deduced as much on this forum, just bumped into this question and now I think that it cwnnot hurt to tick the box.
And to the national team selection, they have the main trials in July( I qualified the pre trials and am playing a championship in Delhi now), but I have my 1st sem exams that time and if I miss it, I don’t get to give the boards. ( I have the excuse, but it is pretty darn hard to get in).
And, I dont think everyone participates in the National Sports meet ( 20 people from every state) that is approx. 600 people.

On a completely unrelated note: Here is an intresting article,
