Should we put KVPY Fellowship under “Academic Excellence” or under “EC”?
Same question about NTSE scholarship as well.

hey !
can anyone tell me , how important is TOEFL for an Indian student ?
I am confused ! :-/

@perfect prashant-chk individual websites

Prashant, TOEFL is not important for Indian student’s in the following cases:

You are a native English speaker (by birth, doesn’t matter if you’re bilingual)

You have been studying in an English medium school for 6-7 years (requirement depends on college)

You get a minimum score (again, definition of minimum varies by college) on the SAT I.

For further details, check individual websites for each college.

Though, college’s wouldn’t mind if you submit a TOEFL/IELTS score even if you fall in any one of the above categories.

thanks tizil and prinki !
I was asking it because , in a last few days I have met a few obtuse people who were saying that " if you don’t submit your TOEFL score to universities ,they will reject you without seeing your application " lol…

Does anyone know when do the supplements come out usually? August 1?

^ Yes.
Though some other universities like GATech have fixed topics for the supplement essays (so you can start writing now ;)

thaanks. how do we know if universities have fixed supplements or not?

Aeronautics/Astronomy enthusiasts! You have gotten admission to Georgia Tech. Yes, you did not apply, but still, you got admission. Revel in the enthusiasm :P

But there’s a catch:

One Question, before you are truly admitted.

Why do you want to attend Georgia Tech?

This can be generalized. Suppose you get admitted to your dream school. But before joining, you must answer one question: Why do you want to study there?

Be creative I’ll post my reply as well :D

PS. Please don’t mistake me for a ripper. I am not plagiarizing. This is just to see why Indian students want to study in the USA.

Hi, my name is Anshuman. I’m currently studying in a well-reputed school in New Delhi. I joined CC a couple of days ago & I’ve been going through the Indian forums.

I’d like to give everyone an overview of my current status & ask for advice. I gave the SAT in June without much prep I got a 670 on CR 700 on math & 620 on writing. My math isn’t bad at all, it just wasn’t my day. I got full 800s in 6 practice tests. So, I’ll be repeating it in October. I’m also giving subject tests in November.

I also have a good EC profile. Here’s a rough list -

Designed the school Website

Founder of the debating society at school

Vice-President of computer club

Founder of anti-bullying squad (Part of student’s council)

President of the Student’s council

Multiple state level debates.

Both school and college level MUNs

Several technological group discussions at state level

Played the guitar for 3 years & also did vocals

Winner of the band competition at school for 2 consecutive years

Part of the school orchestra

I also have 2 years of volunteering at a rehab centre.

My olympiads are pretty strong too, though I haven’t formulated a list for them as of now. There are around 10+ national science, maths & cyber olympiads (which i have top ranks in), & a couple of international ones too.

My dream colleges include Cornell, Stanford & Canegie Mellon. There are also several other engineering colleges I’m interested in.

Thats all I have right now. I’ll really appreciate everyone’s advice & guidance as to where I stand & what I should do.

@anshuman - You do have a good, infact a very good chance as your ECs are quite good. Just improve your SAT score in October. Btw, are you applying for financial aid?

Firstly, which class are you in and… a cbse school? And r you only interested in going to usa for college…or you would consider India too?
Cuz…you are all set man…especially u are bang on with ECs and just right for the colleges you mentioned. But yea your SATs you might take again…Im sure you will do much better…given you got a 1990 on your sort of a impromtu attempt!
So, just chill…you will be fine :)

Thank you for the quick replies.
@iamthebist I wouldn’t be applying for complete financial aid (maybe 50% or so ; we can always pickup jobs can’t we? :D). My parents are willing to pay the entire amount, but I really don’t want to burden them with such a huge amount. I wouldn’t apply for FA at Cornell at all, since we have the TATA thing (Assuming that it’s not counted under cornell’s own scholarships).

@dilettante800 I’m in class 12 with science (PCM & computer). I really want to go to the colleges I mentioned previously. So, no I haven’t thought of pursuing my higher studies in India.

@ Tizil7
ok , hahaha, nice one
will post it soon

@anshuman - I don’t think we are the ones who can select what percentage of financial aid we would like. It is their discretion. Nvm, good luck by the way! I presume you’re aiming for computer science? You’re all set for CMU if 2100+ and that couldn’t be better!

@ prashant and all those interested, I found this great piece of advice on CC:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-essays/1178789-why-do-i-want-go-college.html

Post 2.

@iamthebist Yes, I’m aiming for computer science. I do hope to touch 2100 this time. I have a good 2 months to prepare. :)

Does anyone have any good preparation advice?

The thread’s dead ?
By the way, Is "College Board International Student Handbook " worth buying (as I am a noob in college admission process ) ??
And yes , for writing college essays “The College Application Essay, revised edition by Sarah Myers McGinty” .
Should I buy them?

The thread isn’t dead
Just Quiet ;)

And honestly, you’ll do yourself a lot more good if you research yourself instead of following ‘generic’ advice in the CBISH (can’t type the whole thing, lazy much)

Take out 3-4 hours. Browse the websites of the colleges you are interested in just like you would stalk a girl on Facebook o.O (Comparison only for intensity)

And the College Application Essay? There are a lot of free resources online. Though most of the ‘free’ video advice is unlisted (you can only view those videos if you have the links) How to get the links you ask? Go to the respective college website! (Eg. Yale UG Admissions)

And write your own draft, ask for help around CC in the Essays section. You’re set.

Why pay for something when the free full version is staring you in the face? :D
