The Indian Thread #20

Aw, I wanted the 100th post :D

Nah, haven’t started writing yet. Concentrating on school as of now.
What about the others?

On an unrelated note, Oh well, 101 ftw :D

I noticed something guys.
The average SAT score for Georgia Tech is CR: 580/680, M:650/750, W:580/670.
The average SAT score for CalTech is CR: 700/780, M: 770/800, W: 710/780.
These are the 25th and 75th percentile respectively.
Now, Georgia Tech is ranked 4th (after MIT, Stanford, and UC Berkeley)
And CalTech is ranked somewhere ~ 7 or 8.

Now I feel scared when applying to Georgia Tech. I mean, how is the average SAT score so low for a university in the top 10? Is there a catch? Do they look at well-rounded students more seriously than others? Or do you need to have amazing ECs for Georgia Tech?

I just don’t buy the relatively low SAT score - ranked in the top 5 engg schools of USA situation.

Someone, PLEASE, explain.

Here’s a thought in my mind: Private school? Public School? Not many people applying there?

Thanks :)

Georgia has a high acceptance rate (Its a big public university) while Caltech has got one of the least !!

In my opinion, MIT, Caltech are surely better than Georgia Tech ( here, better in the sense, they have more rigorous coursework, more research opportunities etc.). Since MIT and Caltech are more selective than Georgia Tech, it is kinda obvious that they will have students who have a better SAT score etc. Georgia Tech is also a good school (particularly for aerospace, i feel) but I guess it’s student body will consist of more all-rounders than MIT and Caltech…

Hi! I am also a 2016er.
@Tizil7- georgiatech’s intake is much more and hence comparatively lower SAT scores. and if we see the National universities US news ranking, Caltech, MIT etc are much better than Georgia tech!

I have taken ACT and SAT subject tests. My ACT score is 35 composite and SAT Subject Test score is 800/800 in all three.

Alright, my life just became hell - gave the June exam, got a 1990, a drop of 20 points.
and to get into GOOD places (we all know purdue is a good safety even with that score, but it isn’t as good as say, UIUC or UCLA, is it?)
Now, the thing is - IF I am to get into a good place, I’ll have to hike my score.
and to do that, I’ll have to give the November exam.
I was planning to give my subject tests then, but in my opinion, a high SAT1 score trumps the subject tests - especially for UIUC/CMU, which don’t require SAT2.
My ECs are supposed to be really good, and my school grades are okay too.
I feel like I’m stuck in a quagmire.
PLEASE, HELP!
:|

Georgia tech is not in the top 10. It is somewhere between 30-50. You may be looking at it in some areas of engineering where it may be placed 4th.

Well. Firstly, 1990 isnt a disaster of a score! You still have a fair chance in alll the colleges you mentioned, given that your ECs are really good.
Infact…if your ECs are impressive …i would urge you to consider your SAT IIs…'cause they are equally important…cos they represent your knownledge of the subjects that you are actually gonna study in the college. An average score on SATIIs would really hurt your chances!!

What are ECs like …by the way…and grades?..you are in india right now?

Of course, I’m looking for engineering, and aerospace at that. ;)

I’ve to agree with dilettante, maverick. 1990 isn’t a bad score at all. 4 of my friends gave the SAT this June and scored 1720, 1800, 1950 and 2390. So don’t worry. And also I would love to see your ECs just to gauge myself :)

^^ great  ! your friend got a score of 2390 !! Is he from India ?

Yes. He’s in VMC Reg - top batch. Top 5% of class of 980. Cricket Captain.
And he’s known to lie about his scores - a lot. So I wouldn’t trust him on this one :D

Tizil - There is a lot of difference between Georgia Tech and Caltech. Georgia Tech is a state school and admits a lot of students. Caltech is one of the most exclusive schools in the world, where the incoming class is only 250 students.

Caltech has invented a lot of the technology currently used in aerospace.

My ECs:
(Some of them MAY lack depth, but I have breadth to compensate. :stuck_out_tongue: )

So, what do you think?
Am I worth it? :/

Do you even need a reply, pro?
Your previous score of 2010 with ALL this makes you a potential candidate for almost everywhere.

Best of luck!

@CEMaverick-- Dude, your ECs are realy impressive!!
You will easily get into the schools you mentioned earlier, to say the least.
Not many ppl…especially indians…have those kind of ECs …you surely have an advantage!
I dont think you should be really worried about your SATI …infact…I think if your profile is accompanied with good SATII scores and stunning grades and some luck…then HYP arent far.
Besides…i am saying this 'cos i have two of my cousins and one friend who are there in HYP…and let me tell you…they all have 1950-1990 scores on SAT…
So…just chill!! xD

Wrong.

LOL.

Guys, no need to give false hope. CEMaverick’s ECs are mediocre at best.

I believe I’m gravely mistaken, then. Thanks for correcting me PD. I didn’t realize that the ECs needed to be very strong.

By the way, if you don’t mind, I would like to send you a PM regarding essays. Is it okay with you?

(>.<)

:(
10char

Your EC’s are pretty impressive for an Indian but just above average for an applicant to a top college.

Why cannot you give your sat 1, and 2 subject tests by november? That is a long long way off. If you need to put your head down and treat it like many people treat their 12th board run, then do so.

PS Breadth in EC’s does not necessarily make up for lack of depth.

Coupled with “OK” school grades , an OK sat 1 might not cut it, you need to feel the urgency of the situation, take responsibility and go for it.

I had a mediocre gmat, I fixed it in 2 months and went to the #1 ranked mba program in the world that year. For those 2 months, I did nothing else, for 2 years in b-school I had a ball. Work now, party later :)

Ohkay, I’m seeing this late. I’m a 2016er too, I’m a hosteller in DPS RKP.

I got a screwed up 1920 in SAT I in Jan, giving it again in October =)

I will be applying ED to Reed, I doubt any of you have heard of it =</p>
